DAY 8 - AS IT HAPPENED

GROUP C RECAP

Colombia qualify for the Last 16 after the culmination of the second round of action in Group C tonight as they can only be overhauled by the Ivory Coast, should the Ivory Coast beat Greece overwhelmingly while they themselves lose heavily to Japan.

The permutation is simple for the Africans.  A draw against Greece would be enough to see them qualify for the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

For both Greece and Japan, resounding wins would be the basis of their hopes...

Greece will need to beat Ivory Coast convincingly while hoping that Colombia avoid defeat against Japan to secure their passage into the next round.

Japan themselves will be hoping for a resounding win over Colombia in the hope that Ivory Coast slip up marginally against the Greeks.

ALL OVER, AS YOU WERE AFTER 90 MINUTES!

Well, not one of the more attractive matches of the tournament, but it was always apparent after Greece had their captain Katsouranis sent off a few minutes before half-time that it was going to be a long, hard grind for the 2004 European champions.

Japan on the other hand, lacked the spark they showed against the Ivory Coast and probably missed a beat by starting Endo and Kagawa from the bench.

The end result means that both teams are still alive in the tournament, albeit by a thread, with Japan's final match against Colombia and Greece facing the Ivory coast.

20 Jun 01:52
90+ Japan now resorting to route one, with Greece increasingly comfortable in seeing their Hail Mary passes out to safety.
20 Jun 01:51
90+ - Greece have done what they do best tonight and needed no excuse to adopt their overly conservative style of play, which is how do I say - rhymes with fuss?
20 Jun 01:49
90+ 4 MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME!
20 Jun 01:49
90'- Endo's low, curling drive is well-saved by Kanerzis, it was definitely on its way in...
20 Jun 01:48
88' - Holebas tests Kawashima with a shot from a tight angle, his shot spews out into open play - Japan break down the field with a man advantage, Papastathopoulos eventually handles the ball from 20-yards out, for which he is subsequently booked.
20 Jun 01:44
85' - One of Japan's half-cleared crosses reaches Nagatomo, who cuts inside and attempts a shot, only succeeding in hitting one of his own teammates at the far post, pinging out for a goal kick.
20 Jun 01:42
83' - Japan meanwhile, are distributing the ball into the wide areas, resorting to crosses, which the Greek defence lap up with ease, which is exactly how they intend to play out the rest of this match.
20 Jun 01:41
82' - Samaras putting in a huge shift for the Greeks on defence, much the same as he does for his club Glasgow Celtic...but isn't it a striker's job to score goals? In his defence (pun intended), Greece's backs are against the wall after going down to 10 men.
20 Jun 01:39
81' - Kone makes his way OFF the park, with Greece bringing ON Dimitris Salpingidis for their final change of the match.
20 Jun 01:38
80' - Kone does well down the right for Greece, winning a corner, which will be his last act of the match.
20 Jun 01:36
77'- Okubo strikes a stinging shot from range, which Karnezis punches out for a corner.
20 Jun 01:35
76' - Things still very scrappy with the free-kick count mounting, mostly in harmless areas. Greece trying to suck out all of Japan's invention with their physical dominance.
20 Jun 01:30
71' - Goalmouth scramble as the ball slides across goal to Uchida, who was on the slide himself, but it skews off his boot behind for a goal kick.
20 Jun 01:28
70' - It's just wave after wave of attack from Japan as they try to pry open and opportunity.
20 Jun 01:27
68' - WHAT A MISS BY OKUBO!! Kagawa picks out Uchida down the right hand flank, Uchida squares the ball to Okubo, but all Okubo could do was deliver the ball to the Japanese fans behind the goal instead of the goal itself.
20 Jun 01:25
66' - Honda smashes another inviting free-kick into the Greek wall.
20 Jun 01:20
61' - Japan now fly down the pitch to win a corner of their own. End to end, or rather, corner to corner stuff now...
20 Jun 01:19
60' - Gekas forces Kawashima into a save, only succeeding in parrying it for yet another corner. The resulting corner falls to Kone, whose volley flies wide of the target.
20 Jun 01:17
59' - Another corner to the Greeks as Kone pings one off Kagawa. Honda clears the resulting delivery for another corner.
20 Jun 01:16
58' - Holebas wins a corner for Greece after his cross is deflected behind...
20 Jun 01:15
57' - Shinji Kagawa ENTERS the fray as he replaces Okubo.
20 Jun 01:14
56' - Uchida wins a corner for the Blue Samurai.
20 Jun 01:14
56' - Endo smacks his shot into the wall from the resulting free-kick.
20 Jun 01:13
54' - Samaras gives a silly foul away on Okubo about 25 yards out from goal and his cautioned by the referee.
20 Jun 01:12
53' - Honda is shoved off the ball by Karagounis, the ball, or is it a shot, pops into Karnezis' grateful grasp.
20 Jun 01:09
50' - Nagatomo fouled in an inviting area for Japan. Endo and Honda stand over the dead ball for Japan. Endo floats it into the 18-yard area, but once again, it has evaded everyone in the box.
20 Jun 01:05
46' - Japan make their first change of the match as they replace captain Hasebe with Yasuhito Endo.
20 Jun 01:05

SECOND HALF UNDERWAY

Greece get the second half underway and it is Giorgos Samaras with an audacious effort as he attempts a 50-yard effort with Kawashima off his line, ambling back for the resumption of the match.

HALF-TIME - GOALLESS IN NATAL

A pretty uneventful half for 40 minutes up until referee Aguilar decided to add some spice to the affair, sending off Greece's leader in chief.

Japan tried to push on as a result, but the loss of Katsouranis seemed to have spurred the Greeks to go in search of a goal of their own.

Stay tuned for the second half, in what promises to be a brighter affair to an otherwise cagey affair.

20 Jun 00:47
45+ - Gekas now offside.
20 Jun 00:47

20 Jun 00:43
42' - The red card has meant that Greece are forced into a second change before half-time as Ioannis Fetfatzidis goes OFF to make way for stalwart and Greek legend Giorgos Karagounis.
20 Jun 00:41
40' - Vassilis Torossidis goes close! His stinging shot is saved and goes out for a corner.
20 Jun 00:38
38' - RED CARD - Katsouranis is sent off for a second bookable offence after being booked earlier in the half.
20 Jun 00:35
34' - Oh, wait, it seems as if Mitroglou may well be coming OFF here as Fanis Gekas comes ON for the Fulham striker.
20 Jun 00:33

20 Jun 00:32
33' - Mitroglou back on without the drama...
