Giorgos Karagounis calls it quits

Cape Town - According to BBC news, Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis has announced his retirement from international football following his side's defeat to Costa Rica in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Greece failed to progress after going out 5-3 on penalties.

"This was my last game for Greece", said Karagounis.

"We wanted to stay in Brazil another week or even longer but you can't change it now."

Karagounis insists he is making way for Greece's next generation of footballers and hope they will be successful in the future.

Coach Fernando Santos, who was sent to the stands before the penalty shootout against Costa Rica, will also leave his post after his contract expired on Monday.
