France sweat on Varane

Cape Town - France defender Raphael Varane is considered doubtful for their Soccer World Cup quarter-final clash with Germany after spending Monday night in hospital.

The 21-year-old succumbed to the sweltering conditions in Brasilia as Les Bleus beat Nigeria 2-0 in the Round of 16, with Varane suffering from dehydration and dizziness after the match.

The Real Madrid centre back was admitted to hospital and stayed overnight before rejoining his national team-mates on Tuesday at their training base in Ribeirao Preto.

The French medical staff will continue to monitor Varane in the days leading up to their quarter-final encounter against Joachim Low's side on July 4.

He has started three of his county's four games at the tournament in Brazil, having been rested for their final Group E match with Ecuador before returning to the starting line-up against the Super Eagles.

France face Germany in their quarter-final clash on Friday with the match kicking off at 18:00 SA time.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
