Villa made his international debut in 2005 against San Marino. He has since participated in three major tournaments: 2006 World Cup, Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. He scored three goals at the 2006 World Cup, was top scorer at Euro 2008 with four goals and another five at the 2010 World Cup. He is the second all-time scorer for Spain, trailing Raul González's record of 44 goals.

Villa has had a sterling World Cup 2010, scoring 2 goals in his side's 2-0 win over Honduras, as well as a goal against Chile in the group stages. He also scored against Paraguay in the round of 16 to seal a place in the quarter finals, where he scored against Portugal to line up a clash with Germany in the semi finals.

He currently has 8 goals in FIFA World Cups, and is Spain's highest World Cup goal scorer.
