Cape Town - Adidas will donate 15 000 tickets to deserving school learners as part of its FIFA Ticket Fund campaign, which starts with the national arts competition this weekend.

The adidas Ticket Fund campaign is a FIFA initiative aimed at making 2010 FIFA World Cup matches more accessible to those South African learners who do not ordinarily have the means to purchase tickets for the tournament.

Adidas has received 15 000 tickets from FIFA for the global football showpiece and the brand has chosen to work with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in distributing these tickets to deserving learners from schools throughout South Africa. The learners have been participating in art and football competitions in their respective provinces, culminating in the national finals this month.

Approximately one third of the tickets will go to learners that have reached the arts finals and the other two thirds will go to learners that will take part in the football finals.

Just to put this all into perspective (a little of which some comments lack). Germany had three stadia over 60k to fill in the last World Cup Berlin (72k), Munich (66k) and Dortmund (65k). These stadia hosted 18 games. Four weeks before the start of the last wold cup only 8 of these games had sold out and after pleading with German and European businesses "to be patriotic" and buy tickets for "marketing purposes" Germany filled all but 3 of these games (a noticebale exception was the final - but oops - Germany was not there). South Africa has Soccer City (90k), Ellis (62k), CT (66.5k) and Durban (69.5k) over 60k. These will host 22 games in the first round (!) and a total of 28 games in the tournament! Five weeks before kick-off and you can't get a seat in any of them! Even the Quater finals onward where SA has only faint hope of playing in! i.e We filling our big stadia in big cities even when SA is not in the mix! So thank you Adidas (German origin) for sponsoring kids to the Stadia in the smaller cities when they host some of the less favourite teams. It is very generouse of you. But hardly unusuall as you probably did the same in Germany!

Harsh-I managed to get tickets for the from the first two rounds including tickets to the final. Since the first and third rounds were a lottery people could have applied any time over a month. The problem is that unless you just can line up like now most SA found it to complicated but what else can be done to stop all the tickets ending up with scalpers?

Saw this coming a while back. When FIFA first said that there weren't enough tickets, and then that there were 300 000 tickets still left, I knew (As did a lot of people who were commenting) that the school children would be used as a marketing tactic to stop the stadiums from being empty. All they needed was a sponsor willing to do the marketing behind it and the actual donation to make it seem more altruistic. @ Jack: I beg to differ because I know people who tried to apply at each stage of the application process and were denied, and when the OTC sales came about, they were told that there was a problem with the server. FIFA publically admitted to making a shambles of the ticket sales so I hardly think defending them is appropriate when they themselves pleaded guilty.

It's a measly 15000 tickets out of around 3 million for students who would not be able to afford to go. Good on Addidas for donating them. As for those who are still complaining they can't get tickets why is it those who really wanted them and made the effort actually managed to get them?
