Farouk Khan (Gallo)
Johannesburg - Former Kaizer Chiefs’ assistant coach and now head of Stars of Africa Football Academy, Farouk Khan, believes that the country has lost its footballing identity.

Khan suggests that the reason South African PSL games do not draw the masses to the stadiums is because of the football been played. He says that our player’s are not playing the game as South Africans know it.

“A huge concern for me is that we have lost our identity completely and hopefully, God willing, we will eventually change things in this country. That is why subsequently you will find that so many times the stadiums are empty. It’s because we are not playing the football which made us South Africans," explained Khan.

The former Chiefs’ assistant went on to express his disapproval of getting foreign coaches with limited knowledge and experience into our local game.

“I do not point fingers at foreign coaches but I do believe that when a foreign coach comes, firstly he must be a highly decorated coach. We can’t bring coaches here who are still getting to grips with coaching, coaches who do not understand the methodology, philosophy and the culture of South African players. When we say this, people think we have something against foreign coaches, but that is not the case.

“When you talk about Brazil winning the world cup, although they won, people were still worried about the type of football they played. We are on the other hand have become a country where if we win its okay and it doesn’t matter how we win. On national television you will hear people say it does not matter how you win as long as you win, even if it’s ugly football and that is actually sad,” said Khan.
