Sundowns rack up 24 goals

2012-03-04 17:34

Johannesburg - Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns ran riot against a hapless Powerlines FC outfit, storming to a record 24-0 victory in a Nedbank Cup clash in Kimberley on Sunday.

Sundowns led 10-0 at half-time against their amateur opponents, and stormed clear in the second period to state their intent, progressing to the last 16 of the knockout competition.

The scoreline improved the previous record winning margin of 16-0 in South African top-flight domestic competition, which had stood for 36 years.

Hlompho Kekana netted seven times to lead the charge, with Nyasha Mushekwi bagging six goals and Richard Henyekane pitching in with five strikes.

Kekana and Henyekane scored in rapid succession early on, netting twice each to give 'Downs a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Kekana found the back of the net again with a diving header for his hat-trick, only half an hour in, but Mushekwi then stole the show.

The Zimbabwean showed no mercy, finishing off with complete control to bag five goals in the space of 23 minutes, trashing any hope the hosts had of fighting their way back into the game.

Holding an unassailable lead, Sundowns held nothing back in the second half as they mercilessly stretched the gap.

Mushekwi scored once more before he was taken off, and Kekana spearheaded the dominant attack, bagging another four goals in the second stanza.

Henyekane netted a second-half hat-trick to help seal the visiting side's stamp on the match.

Debutant Samuel Julies, replacement Lebohang Mokoena and Elias Pelembe each scored a brace to round things off.

Powerlines, who were left flailing in the first half, fought back briefly in the second period, but failed to take advantage after breaking through the 'Downs defence on a few occasions.

      Owentjie - 2012-03-04 19:39

Mrasi, whats Indian or white got to do with it.

      Barefoot - 2012-03-04 19:49

Have you seen an average Real Madrid game? when it wins 10 nil or so, does that mean the Spanish league has a pathetic quality? lets be positive for once, look at England possibly the best league in the world but when last did it win the world cup?

      Mohammed Afzal Jhetam - 2012-03-04 19:55

@Dhirshan- the only quality that is shown is that Sundowns is quality team. The Nedbank Cup is like the league cup of England the two teams are from different divisions that's why sundowns (premier division team) should have the quality to whack powerlines fc, who plays in a lower division. @Mrasi- why bring the race issue into everything?

      Viv - 2012-03-04 20:09

Dhirshan, I agree. Mrasi, you're a stupid punk. Race is not the issue, SA football quality is. You tjop.

Well ufortunately the dude has a point, alot of the good players that teams in the PSL win games with are foreigners. Our asses get exposed when our national team has to face these players. Lets accept that we have a problem, there's a difference between being positive & being in-denial.

      Ndurengo Maxzino Mncwabe - 2012-03-04 20:18

Well unfortunately the dude has a point, alot of the good players that teams in the PSL win games with are foreigners. Our asses get exposed when our national team has to face these players. Lets accept that we have a problem, there's a difference between being positive & being in-denial.

      Barefoot - 2012-03-04 20:53

@Ndurengo i agree with you our nationals team is not up to standard but our league is the best is better. that's why i took England as an example they have the best league because of foreign players, my point was why say our football is pathetic after a great win? to score 24 goals against any opponent takes skill and class. example when s.a beat Sri Lanka on cricket did you conclude that Sri Lanka always plays pathetic cricket or did u congratulate the proteas on a game well played?

Good show Sundowns, just bear in mind the next one may not be that easy ! The sky's the limit !!

  • Malvern - 2012-03-05 09:48

If our league was indeed the best, why are our clubs nowhere close to the last 8 of the African Club championship? we are in denial...... we do enjoy our league , yes, it is the richest, yes, is it the best? NO

  • Rehan - 2012-03-05 14:56

@Mbuyiswa Mrasi you have a typical idiotic mentality, making it about race and not football you twat.
