Sundowns hammer Chiefs

2012-08-05 17:41

Pretoria - Kaizer Chiefs suffered one of their most humbling defeats when they went down 4-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.

The outcome was all over bar the muted shouting from a stunned, near-capacity 42 000 crowd, with the Brazilians storming into a 4-0 lead after little more than 30 minutes.

A consolation goal for Amakhosi from Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the 76th minute barely concealed the humiliation of the team who have won this cup competiton a record 14 times - five more than closest rivals Orlando Pirates.

The business-like Sundowns also achieved their most emphatic and clear-cut victory over Chiefs in 80 meetings between the two glamour clubs.

Ironically the Chiefs defence was taken apart following the off-season signing of top international defenders Morgan Gould and Siboniso Gaxa, who were supposedly designed to make the Amakhosi rear-line well nigh impregnable.

In contrast, Sundowns' newcomers Thamsanqa Sangweni, Tebogo Langerman and Edward Manqele made dream debuts while participating in the avalanche of early goals.

Sundowns' remaining goal was scored by an opportunist Lebohang Mokoena, but it was a back-to-form Teko Modise who engineered the Brazilians' triumph with calculated distribution from midfield - playing a part in all of his team's scoring efforts.

Downs appeared to take their foot off the pedal in the second half as play meandered aimlessly to an inevitable conclusion, with Chiefs enjoying greater possession and having numerous, but ineffective shots at goal.

And with nothing going right for Amakhosi, a tame 79th minute penalty from Josta Dladla, after former Santos defender Tyren Arendse had handballed, was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands.

The opening 10 minutes were controlled, in the main, by Chiefs, with no inkling of the Amakhosi demolition that was to follow.

But once Sangweni took advanatge of a pin-point cross from Modise to open the scoring with a pin-point header in the 16th minute, the floodgates seemed to open in the Chiefs' defence.

The injury and replacement of Gaxa hardly helped their cause as Langerman, Mokoena and Manqele added the nails into Chiefs' coffin with four goals materialising in a frantic 20-minute scoring spree.

Chiefs badly missed injured kingpin Siphiwe Tshabalala and new coach Stuart Baxter was almost lost for words at the final whistle, with delighted Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens proclaiming "everything went according to plan in the first half, but we got a little sloppy after the interval."

Majoro and parker were dead, coach should've replaced early on the first half.all I can say is Chicks is dead and there's no doubt about it,if Chicks coach ll continue to field parker and Majoro they ll be relegated this season..they should learn from Orlando Pirates.

  • mabhekana.nzuza - 2012-08-05 19:09

  • collins.nkuna - 2012-08-05 19:09

It was a sundowns' day ,they were lucky with their trademark setpieces,Chiefs should not have played three slow midlefielders in the name of Renelwe, dladla, and Nkosi because they are not fast,,They should sign quality strikes or either they should use Thembiso ngqubo.Parker and Majoro are not effective and the coach should realise that we are not going to score goals with those strikes, yes indeed sundowns have scored goals but what about Chiefs,,,,,,

Only Nengomashe was able to markout Modise my boy. Zim players are beter than SA players. We just need quality players, where they come from does not matter.

What has Baxter achieved in his coaching career that made him a suitable candidate to coach one of the big teams in AFrica? Its clear the man is clueless I could even do a better job.He kept the useless Nkosi in the field for what?He should have pulled out Nkosi for Nqobo and drop Dladla into the middle behind the strikers.Switch Nale to the right and Parker\r\nto the left to play crosses for Nqobo and later pull out Majoro for Katsande or Baloyi and push letsholonyane to join Dladla just behind Nqobo.Well congratulations to Tshwane teams escpecially My team matsatsantsa first stop finals shaaapa matsatsantsa shaaaapa.

  • duze.mthimunye - 2012-08-06 09:56

What happened with the defenders they were raving about? If any thing, Downs proved that signing more defenders will not guarantee a win for anyone, sign strikers as well.

      richard.mphekwan - 2012-08-06 22:52

You know people seem not to understamd how football \r\nWorks.Chiefs had to lose as a team but not on big cups such \r\ntop 8 so as Sundowns but a winner had to be be one.Chiefs \r\nbosses please get pure strking force . Majoro needs to \r\ncontrol the the ball as a striker on fullest as a striker not as \r\nan amateur

      richard.mphekwan - 2012-08-06 23:05

They were there but remember that was football not abt who\r\nwas signed . A lose needs to take place for a good team.

  • sango.jika - 2012-08-06 11:28

Baxter watch out your head is on the line, i got to say sundowns bit the hell out on you guys.
