Sunderland duo arrested

London - Danish international striker Nicklas Bendtner and his Sunderland team-mate and club captain Lee Cattermole have been arrested on suspicion of damaging cars, police said Friday.

Bendtner, 23, who is on loan to the Premier League club from Arsenal, and Cattermole, also 23, were held on Thursday on suspicion of criminal damage and bailed following an incident in Newcastle earlier this month.

The alleged damage, believed to have involved at least three cars, was said to have taken place on December 6, two days after struggling Sunderland lost 2-1 at Wolves.

Northumbria Police will examine CCTV images of the area to establish who was responsible for the damage to the vehicles.

Neither player took part in manager Martin O'Neill's first game in charge at the Stadium of Light, a last-gap win over Blackburn.

Club captain Cattermole was suspended after picking up five yellow cards this season, while Bendtner had a groin injury.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
