Stop 'belittling' Bafana

Aaron Mokoena (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena has called on the media to desist from belittling the national team ahead of next month's Soccer World Cup.

The Portsmouth defender was speaking to the media on Saturday for the first time since arriving back in South Africa.

Mbazo was clearly incensed when he was asked how difficult it would be to integrate the overseas-based players to the local team, which has been together for the past three months at camps in Durban, Brazil and Germany.

"I'm gonna be firm on this. I don't like that term 'overseas-based players and local players'," he said.

"What we are trying to create here is one team, one nation. We are all South Africans here and yes, the coach has said it will be hard to integrate the players (overseas-based) who have just arrived in camp, but we are all here to represent the country, isn't it?

"It is about time now that we use the 'one team one nation' words a lot more, it sounds better doesn't it?"

Mokoena further admitted Bafana Bafana are in a tough group, but added he is confident the team can reach the next round.

"We are in a tough group. We will be playing against very experienced countries but we are all aware of that," the 29-year-old continued.

"We are trying to prepare well, mentally and physically and make sure we are ready for those three important games.

"We have great respect for those three countries, but on the other hand we always say we are the hosts and we are looking forward to a great challenge.

"The boys have been working so hard for the past three months and it shows really that we want to prepare properly.

"The mood in camp is absolutely incredible since I joined the boys and hopefully we will take it to the three games next month. I'm confident we are going to progress."

Mokoena was also on hand to give some clarity on the bonus negotiations, saying he is confident there won't be an impasse.

"The money situation, the negotiations are ongoing and I'm confident we will conclude soon. But it is time we focus on the big task that is the World Cup and to enjoy the experience on home soil," he concluded.

We dont have to belittle them they do that all by themselves
Rob Pienaar5/25/2010 2:44 PM
I agree wholeheartedly with Aaron Mokoena. We should stop belittling BB. It cannot be doing their self-confidence any good. After all, as we see in Shaoiro’s cartoon in the M&G today, they are little enough already. The commentator on last night’s game against Bulgaria kept saying that BB are still a work in progress. Quite right he is too. After all we don’t want them to peak too soon before the World Cup starts now, do we? Nature: I guess you are too young to remember that SA has never been much good at soccer. Even in the fifties and sixties we would get English clubs coming out here for their off-season joll, and beating a Springbok side. The SA soccer team are not suffering because they have a belittling nick-name. They got the name Bafana Bafana because they played like little boys in the first place. Harold: Sure the whole country was behind the Springboks. Everybody loves a winner. Losers lose alone. (In fact when we hosted and won the 1995 Rugby WC we had nothing to be proud of other than just our team. We didn’t have to spend Billions we didn’t have to try and prove to the world that we were great and that this was a great country.) Linda: “Done us proud many times before” !!! My memory must be fading. Name a few. Gidza: I have a prayer – “Please God may I be proved wrong in my perception of SA’s prospects for the 2010 SWC.” Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be proved wrong.
Gidza5/25/2010 12:39 PM
Shame to all you negative talkers. You will only have one place to hide when bafana surprise the world by beating the so called BIG teams and that is up your a**es!!!!.Well FEEL IT, IT IS HERE!!!!
WhiteBoytjie5/25/2010 8:06 AM
Am tired of all the negative people out there, so putting my money where my mouth is and going to the game on Thursday night to watch Bafana Bafana for the first time. Challenge all of you who dare stick up for your country and team to do the same!
ChinaWolf5/25/2010 3:53 AM
@ROTFLMAO - Well said my Buddy ... they would have NEVER been ABLE to Qualify ..... may the the hole SWC SA is political again .... namely the Idiot Blatter - how much did they pay him I wonder?????
Linda5/24/2010 10:30 PM
Bafana you have done us proud many times before. Keep up the good work. I am 100% behind you. All my love, Linda.

It seems to me a little sad to observe how you people fight against each other instead of supporting a national team and beeing pleased of having such an important event in your country. At this moment i cannot wait to travel more than 27 hours to be with you in the next world cup. Cu M8s in soccer city and try to enjoy your worldcup.

It's time Banana Banana stop calling itself Bafana Bafana. It's no longer cute. It sounds like a pre-school team (rather than a national team). I won't be supporting them, and if that makes me unpatriotic so be it. I honestly couldn't care less what all of you think. The truth is Banana Banana is terrible. They're the worst team in the SWC, and if they're not destroyed by France, Mexico or Uruguay, then I will emigrate to that fail, Australia. Brian Nthini, 072 345 7648

What's different? The media were doing very little for soccer even when I was at school. I'm 65. They've been "obliged" to change a little since about 1996.
Sosha5/24/2010 3:28 PM
Please guys when Bafana dissapoint you during the World Cup do not come back and mourn over various issues as if you were not aware of them before. Support Bafana at your own risk, and do not come and flood our radio stations, TV, blogs, and newspapers with negative comments about Bafana at that time. Please do not cry, do not shed tears as if you were not warned. Kukhalelwa uzumekile! (One who has not been fore warned or is not aware is cried for). It is our duty to provide you with facts so that you will not have excuses that you were not told.
Sakhile Mlaba5/24/2010 2:59 PM
Tonight SA plays against one of the European teams. I wonder what would happen if Bafana can perform badly tonight. Does all these people who are 500% supporting Bafana without leaving any room for themselves to see conspicuous weaknesses on our squad, what are they going to say? Are they not gonna be the first people who will start blaming Bafana, particular players, coach, SAFA etc? Be critical guys do not be like Amazulu FC who were overpowered by the occassion of playing in front of the 70 000 spectators for the first time. Be realistic.
ROTFLMAO5/24/2010 2:51 PM
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA - amauseless amauseless! SA soccer is such a joke. How are they going to win a game? How can any of the soccer supporters even fathom a win from SA? There will no doubt be some supporters that will unite together for all the wrong reasons, as per usual. We united with the rugby because the rugby CAN ACTUALLY DELIVER!!!! hahahahahaha, soccer sa, what a joke. You should be belittle yourselves you bunch of 2 legged spastic ball kicking bafana bafana losers. I would suggest bafana bafana should just take part in the sing and dance opening ceremony and then go the F^** home!
BigZozo5/24/2010 2:50 PM
Geehman, unfortunate I cannot do that because I will be glued at my TV box watching England and Mexico. Bafana will be a delayed match to me tonight. Infact I am used to this delayed matches. So today I decided to intentionally watch Bafana delayed.
Mr. Cool5/24/2010 2:40 PM
If my sources are correct, it was a good move to prevent the players from reading watching any news until the W.C is over. I do not believe come of the people commenting here. If you have nothing positive to say it sometimes helps to just keep quiete. I hate to say this but it sonds as if S. Africans will politisize almost everything that encounter. Good luck Bafana Bafana
Joe5/24/2010 2:37 PM
I don't support Bafana..16 years after democracy the team still does not have enough white representitives. This is an ANC skabenga team managed by ANC boeties. Sorry, not interested in supporting them. There are many white players that are better players than the fools we have in Bafana but they're not chosen.
@Cross5/24/2010 2:13 PM
Cross do you not think you have spoken enough gabbage for the day? Fact is the low IQ masses will be there supporting their team. They are so stupid to know that if their own country plays they must give their UN-CONDITIONAL SUPPORT. They are not that "smart" to abandon Bafana Bafana for England or Italy or Spain. Spain will just tell them "no thanks, support your own team. We do not need you or your noise." Same thing goes to you Cross, support your own negative vommit, we donot need it.
mphozania5/24/2010 2:10 PM
Buccaneer you call a win against a team that is only gud ka Rugby a successful Confed Cup? Come on Man. I am not being negative but just try 2 be realistic...Bafana Bafana needs serious prayers or players (whateva comes first).
Cruzito5/24/2010 1:39 PM
How can we call our warriors going to battle with other nations 'Bafana Bafana' and expect them to deliver like 'Amadoda'? that is totally sick, the name itself is sending us down the drain, especially with Benni McFatty?

Harold5/24/2010 1:36 PM
To all the SA soccer haters - remember how the whole country supported the Boks in '95 & 2007. All South Africans should get behind Bafana. The WC is about different nations coming together with their contrasting styles of football. Add to that the colour & vibrancy of the game. I could care less who wins the cup. The tournament means more for the 31 teams who don't win than the one team that wins. I will support SA even if we don't win a game or score any goals because my ID book says I am South African not Anti-South African!
kitchenboy5/24/2010 1:27 PM
@vincent; take the stick out of your a*** and join the 21st century, earrings have NOTHING to do with ability. so if you dont have any intelligent contribution to make take your selfrighteous crap somewhere else
kitchenboy5/24/2010 1:12 PM
@nature: fair enough bru, still you are not explaining why other sports have moved forward while soccer alone seeks new lows rather than highs. dont get me wrong, in my first post i declared my support, but support does not mean beeing blind to SAFA's and bafana's shortcomings
vincent5/24/2010 12:41 PM
take your moffies from your ears and you will play better, I hate a man with ea rings in their ears, they must decide whether they wear bloomers or underpants, and leave the sagomas out, try the cross maybe you will do better.
Gunnar5/24/2010 12:41 PM
Play well & the money will roll in. Too many promises of cash upfront &you want bother how you play!
Bucs Faithful5/24/2010 12:31 PM
Cross l have passion for Bucs and the national team. Rome wasn't built in one day. For me it takes time and worst result to achieve great things in football. I am a proudly Mzansi dude who doesn't chicken out when times are hard for both Bucs and Bafana Bafana. Im loyal to these local brands.

Cross5/24/2010 12:18 PM
Mokoena is jst complaining about nothing,,,,Bafana is ridiculously terrible!!! he knows they will lose all their games, he knows they cnt compete against the European players, they are weak!!! our squad cant even compete in Africa....they are dreaming of winning a game in a WC. they will lose...and set a new record for the Hosts not to qualify for second round....but atleast they will go down with Brazil....in the group stages...Records will be made in this WC....one thing i know about soccer...its fair...You always get what you put in...if you score goals you win, and if you dont you also dont win...now SA fans stop this nonsense you saying about Mphela scoring goals or Modise outplaying Malouda...
Jay5/24/2010 12:08 PM
SAFA have stuffed this one up. They should have done marketing of the team. By now every SA citizen should know who is who in the team, who does what, little bits of history etc. What have SAFA done to promote these guys to us? Not even a poster in a magazine. We are all proudly SA but apart from the few famous guys in the team, most of them are not that well known to the SA public. Many non-sport people who don't normally watch soccer or rugby are known to get very interested and involved when their national team is playing. Come on - help us on this one!
Nature5/24/2010 12:03 PM
we kitchenboy my boy, I am one of the law makers of SA, so don't worry about personna non grata, its what people think of bafana.
lawl5/24/2010 11:57 AM
not the medias fault sa soccer sucks...
Richard5/24/2010 11:41 AM
How can the spirit in the team be so great, when the team is busy fighting about bonuses. The England team is donating their match fees to charity and Bafana is on a R1 mil per goal, obvious they dont think they will be getting too much of that, that they need to negotiate bonuses.Bonuses are given in appreciation of a job well done not a prerequisite before you start, so get out their and do the job, then the press will get off your back
Cross5/24/2010 11:38 AM
Bucs faithful i dont blame you for your blind support of Bafana...you are used to supporting losers....the last time your team won a decent cup was in 1995...and also the last time your national team won the cup was in 1996....you are now immune to losing....Go Bafana and be back very soon after 3 games to join us on the stands and watch ada serious teams.
kitchenboy5/24/2010 11:26 AM
@nature: dude i doubt you know what persona non grata even means, in any case, ALL sports where banned and in isolation, not just soccer, but it is realy only soccer that has not gotten its act together, SAFA and ill-disciplined players are to blame, oh and hiring of coaches whos only interest is the fat paycheck
Albert Einstein@Nature5/24/2010 11:23 AM
I think you still believe in Father X-mas. FIFA banned RSA not Herzog etc. you fu%$king idiot.........If any of our players were good many more would play overseas.
Graham5/24/2010 11:19 AM
What is up with South Africans. So many crybabies and people who can't see the positives. You would think our we were New Zeelanders or (god forbid) Australian they way we winge and wigne. At least those two nations find others to blame their problems on and are carefull not to harm their own chances of success by negative reporting and crabby "supporters" comments. If you read their nespapers you would think their teams are going to win the world cup (just as they thought the super 14 fianl was going to be in Sydney). Their scars on team moral are from their supporters self inflicted love bites, ours teams scars on moral are from our supporters self flagilation (mind you our media has yet to show example of national support in "majority" anything never mind the "majority sport")! Simple message B+ or FO (my name on my Bafana Bafana & Bulls shirts).
Thabo Seleke5/24/2010 11:17 AM

TITANIC5/24/2010 11:11 AM
The scores againt the SAfrican XI will total 19-0, not even 19-12 like the ship that went down. Love it when an ego goes pop.
Bucs Faithful5/24/2010 11:05 AM
Bafana Bafana players must not worry about negative media comments towards them. Prove them wrong like you guys did during the Confed Cup. Make the nation proud. Firstly foreign and local critics doubted SA capabilities for host 2010 WC. Foreign media was silenced now it is up to Bafana Bafana players to silence these local critics by going all the way to the final. Ayoba Bafan Bafana.
Banana5/24/2010 11:02 AM
What does it help to belittle the national team, lets get behind them, support them during the world cup and then call them what they are post Wrld Cup - a team ranked just shy of 100 in the world!
Navarac5/24/2010 11:01 AM
Politicians, police officers, sportspersons, teachers, etc. cannot demand respect. One commands respect by earning it. Go, Bafana, and command respect!
Nature5/24/2010 10:59 AM
Credit should be given to Hertzog, Verwoed, Botha, Malan and the whole team for having South Africa banned from FIFA in 1966, they did a briliant job that is why we are currently in positio 90. So now one can see how 29 years being out of action can contribute to the well being of a nation. To you ghosts out there, well done you did us proud, now Bafana Bafana are personna non grata.

Why do we have to be BAFANA BAFANA? Why not just BAFANA? Sounds less primary school. Good luck in any case. Lets us stand together as a nation and become WE and not THEY.
Cross5/24/2010 10:33 AM
You know this is where you really see and measure the IQ of our nation. Nowonder it is said tht our IQ (Africans) especially "South"... is below the room temperature...how can we seriously believe that Bafana Bafana will reach the Quarter finals??? Wht facts do we base that on?? Everything points out Bafana being knocked out as early as possible, evrything points out they cant win a game....but for some reason we seem to see things which are totally not there....dont get me wrong, i am a South African and i love soccer......its by default i support bafana,,, but i know its impossible for us to win a game or even score more than 3 goals....so thts why im still looking for serious team to support for the whole WC not only for first 3 games....soccer is not like playing dice....we dont have good players to compete against the other teams....the other teams have good players...WE have lost before we even began.
Nyiko5/24/2010 10:25 AM
I have never seen a nation going to world cup with no big names like SA. Group stages will be by mercy of god not by performance.

Just like Aron helped Portsmouth to sink, i think he will have the effect on Bafana.
Geehman5/24/2010 10:19 AM
Go and check out an Italian newspaper and check the devotion to the analysis of a match or team. Read most of our newsprint and compare the difference. The only journalists in my opinion worth considering in SA are Carlos Amato and Mark Gleeson. The rest are full of hyperbole, cliche's and formulaic writing - very little insight shown. The media in SA has an obsession with anything English - if John Terrry's toenail is ingrowing, every newspaper in SA will spew rubbish about England's (mis)fortunes. Try and find one which will give informed tactical analysis of SA vs Bulgaria on our doorstep tonight.

Ja really ffs, start supporting our boys!!! You're probably the same people who also didn't give the Stormers a chance at the start of the year, but now all of a sudden you're possibly the first people who are going to buy tickets for the final and parade through the streets saying "I am the biggest Stormers fan in the world". All of you guys who write these fag comments about "let's be realistic and sh!t" are all a bunch of glamour pompers and glory supporters. It's people like you who make me throw up in my mouth a little. Really just shut up and go sit in the corner. Go Bafana and Aaron!! Make us proud!!

Wha ha ha!!! Oh stop me from belittling myself by playing so bad!!!
LETONA5/24/2010 10:03 AM

James5/24/2010 10:00 AM
If they expect us to be passionate about them then why cant they be equally passionate and play for the honour rather than bonuses. The reality is that they deserve to get knocked out in the first round! As regards bonuses, I heard a quip at my gym that they should offer the team US$1 billion each to win the SWC as the money will NEVER have to be paid and will therefore be very safe! Furthermore, what about all the money that has been spent on them over the last four years or so to train them - must run into hundreds of millions. It coud surely have been used for a much worthier cause.
Sox5/24/2010 9:55 AM
