Spurs back in SA

Johannesburg - English Premiership side Tottenham Hotspur are coming back to South Africa to feature in the celebrated 2011 Vodacom Challenge, reports the Sowetan

The match will afford soccer loving South Africans an opportunity to see midfield star Steven "Schillo" Pienaar and defender Bongani Khumalo on these shores in the colours of the North London club.

They will be making their debut in this yearly event that was not staged last year because of the Soccer World Cup.

Pienaar and Khumalo joined Spurs during the January transfer window from Everton and SuperSport United.

A source close to the developments on Monday told Sowetan the deal was done and Spurs were coming.

"An announcement will be made towards the end of the season by the relevant parties with regard to Tottenham and match venues.

"It's good to have Spurs on our shores this year, especially considering that Schillo and Khumalo have joined the club," the source said yesterday.

Spurs, whose first trip to South Africa was back in 2002 when they signed Mbulelo Mabizela, won this tournament in 2007.

Mabizela is now playing for Platinum Stars.

The tournament is the brainchild of powerful South African soccer administrators Kaizer Motaung of Chiefs and Irvin Khoza of Pirates. It was introduced in 1999 as Vodacom sought to leverage their sponsorship of the Soweto giants.
