Chiefs legend passes away

Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Isaac 'Shakes' Kungwane has passed away at the age of 43.

The news was confirmed in a statement released by SuperSport, where Kungwane was a presenter, via their Twitter account.

"(sic) It is with great sadness that SuperSport confirms the death of former football star-turned-TV presenter Isaac Kungwane. RIP Shakes," read the tweet.

Kungwane made two substitutes appearances for Bafana Bafana, but will most be remembered for his time playing for the AmaKhosi and Jomo Cosmos in the 1990s.

However, injuries blighted his career and after an SOS call to then Manning Rangers coach, Gordon Igesund in 1999, Kungwane revived his career under the current Bafana Bafana mentor, spending two seasons at the club.

He eventually retired from professional football in 2002.

It is understood that Kungwane was recently released from hospital after falling ill a few weeks ago, but it is not yet known what the reason for his hospitalisation is.

Kungwane is survived by his wife Precious and three children.

Friends, fans and family of Isaac “Shakes”Kungwane are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za.
