Former Safa deputy president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana still wants his position back.
Just when football people thought they had heard the last of Nonkonyana, he resurfaced with yet another court action.
Last week, the South Gauteng High Court reserved judgment on the matter involving the banned Nonkonyana and Safa.
The chief is not only challenging his suspension and eventual expulsion from Safa but is also demanding that the association produce minutes of the meetings in which decisions against him were made.
He confirmed the matter was heard by the South Gauteng High Court last week.
He said he felt that justice had not been done when he was fired from the association last year.
Nonkonyana was dismissed by the association at last year’s annual general meeting. In 2013, he was suspended following his comments that then Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund should be fired if he failed to win the 2014 African Nations Championship.
He has applied for:
. Transcripts of the meeting of Safa’s national executive committee held on August 24 2014;
. Minutes of the meeting held on August 24 2014;
. Notice of the motion sent to members of the respondent proposing his expulsion;
. Notice of the annual congress held on October 11 2014;
. The transcript of the meeting of its annual congress held on October 11 2014; and
. Minutes of the meeting of its annual congress held on October 11 2014.
Nonkonyana said he still believed his suspension and expulsion were unconstitutional.
“It has been a long battle, but I am not going to lose hope, as I still believe I did nothing wrong,” said a defiant Nonkonyana. He said even if he was not successful this time around, he would still amend the notice of motion to declare Safa’s action null and void.
He said he remained involved with football at a local level.
“I will continue to be a consultant on all football affairs to keep myself abreast of them. I am a resource to all footballers in the country and have established the Chief Mwelo Sports Trust, which will be launched after this case has been finalised.”
Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said: “This is a continuation of Nonkonyana’s efforts to be reinstated and challenging the association’s decision to expel him.
“We have no further comment other than to say we await the judge’s decision in this regard.
“Safa defended its decision in court and awaits the judge’s decision. The deadline for any appeal has long lapsed and there are no further avenues of appeal available. Therefore, the appeal to the court by Nonkonyana.”
