SAFA search for next SA coach

Johannesburg - The next Bafana Bafana coach would be a true-blue South African - and the appointment of a third assistant coach to Carlos Alberto Parreira for the World Cup, remained in the pipeline.

Urbane South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani, revealed on Tuesday that "both these decisions are cast in stone - and there is no going back on what forms an integral part of our vision for the future."

Nematandani said the desirability of having a South African coach at the helm of Bafana had long been accepted - but gnawing doubts had existed about whether there was a local candidate with the international experience and know-how for the enormous undertaking.

"We now feel the time is ripe to take on this challenge," said the SAFA president, "and when Parreira's contract expires after the World Cup, the next Bafana coaching appointment will be a South African."

Nematandani said linked to this was the decision to appoint a third assistant coach for the World Cup - "who will also be a South African.

"Pitso Mosimane, who is currently one of Parreira's assistants," added the SAFA president, "is an obvious candidate to take over from the Brazilian.

"But we intend casting our net far and wide and the new assistant coach will also come under consideration."

Nematandani said the delay in appointing Bafana's third assistant coach was prinipally due to a desire to include in the process all the coaches in the PSL - "and we don't want to disrupt any of the clubs before the completion of the Premier League.

"So you can expect the third Bafana assistant coach to be named early in March," added the SAFA president.

"But the final choice of a Bafana coach," said Nematandani, "will not be limited to the two South African assistant coaches,

"The issue will be reviewed after the World Cup, with the status and stature of coaches sometimes changing by the day - and when we make our decision we want to be sure it is the right choice."

In the meantime, incumbetent coach Parreira is due to name on Wednesday a preliminary squad of approximately 30 locally-based players to participate in a World Cup training camp in Durban only hours after his return from an extended holiday in Brazil - a delayed situation that will presumably not arise when Bafana have a South African at the helm.

SA really missed a chance to use on their brightest prospects. Gordon Igesund has been continually overlooked, and is now probably out of the reckoning. It's not like their other choices were resounding successes, and we'll never know what impact he would have had. I rate him higher than Gavin Hunt - But we really could have had our first international superstar manager. But anyway, i watch as SAFA/whoever continue to make feeble decision, and expect the general public to blindly support them.

@Henk get a life and dictionary too while your at it. My point : Parreira has indicated that he does not want a 3rd assistant so why is SAFA insisting with this idea, because that person could end up being a ball boy under Parreira.

Many years ago, everytime, we lost a game, SAFA said that they are preparing the team for the World Cup. Therefore we should not be too perturbed by the loss....! I wonder if they are still using that old excuse "we are preparing the team for the future".... Perhaps we should prepare a team to suit a New Coach. I personally don't give a hoot...who is playing, who is coaching - we need a winning combination and can proudly say that we are a WINNING TEAM and not a team being prepared for 2090.....

All the best Mr Nematandani, the new broom sweeps squeeckyclean. @Sports Fanatic-You must be a fanatic of sports other than soccer, wtf?? What has Moeti administered to deserve a national coaching post, let alone to be an assistant thereof? Bafana post is not a learning curve for up and coming wannabes. Kirsten is looking for someone with "international experience and know-how" and none of your condidates has this. For you to even raise Dr Khumalo's name just shows you must be one of those who don't read the article but only the headline and you quickly spew garbage.

Develop the players first, then talk of choaches. This guys are heading straight onto a brick wall.
Henk1/12/2010 3:53 PM
I think Jake White should be pulled in. He has the International Experience, the Admin Skills, Personnel Management Skills, Political Understanding, and the support of probably most of the country. Getting involved with Soccer couching can be an exciting challange for him.

Third Bafana Assistant coach! I don't think this is a good Idea as I don't bealive that too many assistants makes any difference and appointing someone now might disturbilize the team if they make an incorrect appointment.

"The issue will be reviewed after the World Cup, with the status and stature of coaches sometimes changing by the day". what the hell does this mean?? @Clive Barker1/12/2010 2:54 PM - please refrain from being a moron

Utter lunacy, no side in the world, that has any World cup aspirations for the future, would adopt such narrow-minded thinking. South Africa's style of football is at fault, not the players nor the coaches, Get the right man/woman for the job as long as they understand that statistically the best performing sides in the world play a style of football known as Western European football, (for more read SOCCERNOMICS). Also create a culture of soccer in this country, To be succesful we need Money, Experience and Talent. Not a new coach every six months. Finally get the politicians out of the game for once and for all. Until then Soccer/football in SA is doomed.

Gavin Hunt has proved beyond doubt tor the past two seasons that is a true & a great coach. I would suggest they give him the position he deserves as a south african, and Pitso Mosimane should be his assistance coach and Clive (the big dog) Barker as his second assistance or mentor for the team. With these three i see the future of bafana bafana, i see the good days used to be displayed by bo Doctor ntwana wa Khumalo been brought back to the mind of all the south african. Thank you..
mbiza1/12/2010 3:17 PM
till when will Pitso assist a foreign coach that is not even here as we speak. Parreira has started with his tricks. what i know is he'll be here with his wife and is that guaranteed ? so pse let's get our own SA coach as soon as possible. the whole nation is crying . we rather lose important games under our own mentors like Parreira's home town. enough is enough

I want congratulate the President of SAFA Mr Kirsten Nematandane for surviving his 100 days in office as the president of the association. The issue of a local coach is long overdue an want to applaud the regime for considering a local guy. I want to appeal to all south africans that we must all support our local coach an stop destroying them. Screamer, Shakes, Trot and clive barker where all our national coaches. What we did as the nation was to destroy them all and brought our overseas counterpart. Let us be patriotic and support our own, look at nigeria Amodu is a nigerian and they have confidence in the man hence he is doing a good job. So well done Mr President we will support you all the way.
Sports Fanatic1/12/2010 3:12 PM
Thing is, it shouldn't be only one, there has to be a pool of coaches in case one fails, one can take over. We have Steve Khompela, Gavin Hunt, Roger De Sa, Manqoba Mqithi, Doctor Khumalo. There's more.... Another thing, let us groom former players in management, so that we avoid the likes of Sedibe who in my opinion is still wet behind ears in terms of football matters, to run. We have potential capable and astute administrators like Dungi Moeti, Neil Tovey (who I must add, can be a capable coach if he leaves crying behind when Chiefs beat his side,)
Tshifhiwa Magadani1/12/2010 3:12 PM
Nice Move Vho-Nematandani though is long over due, i think Gavin Hunt stand a good chance but as for Jomo he should just forget, his team is fighting tooth and nails to avoid relegation, Let Hunt be the coach and Pitso, Gordon be his duputies. It take a brave man and skin think person to take that dicision and once again Ro livhuwa vho-Nematandani for standing your ground .
david1/12/2010 3:12 PM
Now all of a sudden in hindsight to the Beast issue... This was actually so predictable... I wish that our decision makers could tranform from Re-Active to Pro-Active...
Mike1/12/2010 3:07 PM
Wahahaha! Please define "true-blue South African"
Joe1/12/2010 2:56 PM
Can only be Gavin Hunt... the others have passed the Sell By Date
George1/12/2010 2:56 PM
This is good news I guess, I will put my money onto Pitso, for squad selection, and please coach make sure you exclude Benni (Banana)
Clive Barker1/12/2010 2:54 PM
It should read true-black coach!
Caiphus1/12/2010 2:54 PM
Mr Nematandani this was lond overdue but i would you SAFA to really look this matter carefully because we are going face a big fight between 1.Jomo,2.Hunt,3.Mosimane and 4. Gordon. All these coaches that i have mentioned they will kill to take the hot seat.We will be under the impression that we afre building hence we will be destroying big time. The power of money in this couitry is amazing and i suggest the couaches mentioned above to be given opportunities on the development of soccer in this country from under 17 deep in to the rural bushes of this beautiful country. i thank you.
