Danny Jordaan (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Danny Jordaan will contest Issa Hayatou for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football.

According to the South African Football Association, Jordaan's name will be put forward ahead of the 2011 CAF general elections.

SAFA vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyana says his organisation have lofty ideals about improving soccer in Africa and feel that Jordaan is the right man to oversee their vision.

He told the Sunday World: "Our position is clear, we want to transform soccer, not only in Africa, but the rest of the world."

Nonkonyana added that SAFA have no intention of stepping on any toes but they are determined in their resolve.

"We have already consulted extensively in this regard. We have to know CAF's views. We don't want to antagonise people; we wish to make a difference," he added.

"Change must come, but it must be a change for the better. We will nominate a person with extensive knowledge of the game, and a person who has demonstrated those qualities is Danny Jordaan."

Cameroon-born Hayatou is the fifth president of the Confederation of African Football. At just 28-years-old he became Secretary General of the Cameroon Football Association before taking up the position of Chairman of the FA in 1986 and chosen to sit on the CAF Executive Committee. Hayatou took over from Ethiopia's Ydnekatchew Tessema as CAF president in 1987 upon Tessema's retirement.

I strongly support Danny for CAF Presidency. The current President has been at the helm for too long now. It is a pity that Kirsten is already SAFA President. He is a lighty weight even to the Iron Duke. Danny would be better suited as SAFA President. However, good luck for him in his endevour to be CAF President.

This is a very good move. Danny is the best man for the job. Southern Afrficans should rally behind Danny. Let's oust Issa. He has overstayed. I will never the way he treated Kaizer Chiefs when they failed to travel to Madagascar due unrest in that country. The man has really messed up African football.

@hiedie you don't know what you are talking about. The fact that Danny Jordan was LOC head doesn't mean he was the only brain behind 2010 WC. Whether Danny was there or not 2010 WC would have been damn well organised. What made this event a success was the big money and infrastracture which was invested. It wasn't all about Danny or any other individuals.

hayatou got to the position due to the performance of the Cameroun teams in African CAF competitions. AFCON, World Cup, Club competitions canon Yaounde, Union Douala, Tonnere etc and even the Olympic games etc. South Africa have not acheived any where near except hosting a successful WC. If the argument is sound then the most successful WC in USA will have an American as FIFA boss. Charity begions at home. Lets get SA soccer to where it belongs and the rest will fall in place.
Dofo7/26/2010 6:15 PM
Hmmmmmm..., sounds familiar. Remember the 'African Rennaisence? Lets be careful that we do not stir the continent into a perception that we belive we are better than the rest of the bunch - much like snobish. After all, charity begins at home and if South African soccer is anything to go by, then maybe Jordaan should rather focus on fixing the problems at home rather than fix the world. Mbeki tried it, but we still have service deivery protests at home?

Yes yes yes!! That is what we want and like about SAFA, once in a blue moon let CAF be ruled by a Southerner, a person from SADC region and who can then exact more overhauls on football and not be like Hayatou, he never did his duties with respect, but only with pride. Change is pain, there must be changes also in CAF we are tired similar people with no vision leading African football. If then Danny is the man for that job so be it.

Is this a joke !! Please get your damn own house in order !!! To much praise for the World Cup now you think you can change the world !! Please get down from your high horses and wake up. If not for Sepp Blatter you would have got rid of Danny long ago.Without Danny the world cup would surely have been a flop.....this Blatter knew.

Danny Jordaan did a good job with the WC, but he was at SAFA for a long time and our development is still a mess. A much better choice that Hayatou though!
Zweli7/26/2010 3:39 PM
This is the best thing I've ever heard from SAFA. You go Danny, I just hope Khoza will not interfere.
Sello7/26/2010 3:36 PM
The Iron Duke must be furious wherever he is. This was a move he was waiting to make should he have been allowed to steal the SAFA Precidency.
Roger7/26/2010 3:29 PM
Good Luck Mr Jordaan but please remember, South Africa comes first.
JMT7/26/2010 3:27 PM
Forget SAFA I would like to see Danny run for president of SOUTH AFRICA ! He proved to be a great organiser, motivator, speaker; a sensible thinker and an achiever at global level . Imagine our future if the Rainbow Nation could ever get a President to get to his level .
Tshepo7/26/2010 3:11 PM
How the hell does SAFa plan to "transform" African football while our local soccer is in a mess???
Negry7/26/2010 3:04 PM
Its Great move SAFA and Good Lucky Jordaan!
Bucs Faithful7/26/2010 3:03 PM
LOL Iron fist style running of CAF is over. Its been long overdue.
Zukile7/26/2010 2:58 PM
Way to go Danny! All the best of luck. Khoza must be very happy now that no one will oppose him. Pity the mediocre will continue in SAFA and the PSL now that people with real vision and integrity are leaving South African football. God bless South African football...
Leo7/26/2010 2:53 PM
It was about time! You have my vote Danny. It's visionaries like yourself that will take African soccer to higher levels.
Ledig Schoolboy7/26/2010 2:46 PM
Good move! Let's not forget these about Hayatou: he initially said that no African country can host the World Cup; he voted for Morocco in May 2004; lastly, he is known to sideline officials from the Anglophone African countries and prefers those from Francophone ones. He should go, anybody other than him is fine for some of us!
GG7/26/2010 2:45 PM
This will be a good move for CAF, i think he can bring back the spirit it AFCON
Rhadi7/26/2010 2:43 PM
It's about time! Hayatou has been a dictator at CAF, and has been embarrassing in the manner in which he has dealt with some key issues to hit African soccer (the most recent being the Togo bus shooting incident at AFCON 2010). Jordaan is a man who may realistically end the big bully's reign at the helm of CAF
Rhorhwesikhuni7/26/2010 2:34 PM
SAFA should first make sure they transform football here at home before they try to transform it in Africa and the world. Firstly, our football club fail dismally at the CAF competitions, secondly, our under-20 failed to beat Lesotho over the weekend, so before trying to change the world, look in your own house please.

I think it is about time we have new blood in CAF, since 1987 I'm that shows he stand unopposed for a long time so it is time he hands over to someone with vision for development and growth of soccer in Africa. Danny has love and passion for the sport he will do lot better.
