SA soccer star died of Aids

2012-03-06 09:01

Johannesburg - The family of Thabang Lebese has disclosed that the soccer star died of HIV/Aids complications, the family's spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Fana Tshabangu said that they were shocked to learn of Lebese's status after his death, especially his mother.

"Lebese died before he could tell his family about his status himself. We are honouring Lebese's last wish as friends of his told us Thabang always wanted to disclose his status."

The family apologised to the Gauteng department of health, and the Helen Joseph Hospital staff and management for statements that blamed the hospital for Lebese's death.

"We are satisfied with the care he received at the hospital," Tshabangu said.

Gauteng health department spokesperson Simon Zwane said the department accepted the apology and considered the matter to be closed.

Lebese's funeral was held on Friday.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder, aged 38, died in Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, last month.

"Lebese died before he could tell his family about his status himself". Rubbish. He obviously knew his status, and it only takes a minute to tell anyone, such as the family. He chose to keep it secret, which caused the family to wrongly blame the hospital for his death. And how many people did he infect with Aids/HIV, knowing that he was ill, but not revealing his condition? I don't imagine he abstained from sex. Such people are dangerous, stupid, amoral, and anti-social.

      BabyBash Tshesejane - 2012-03-06 12:33

Douglas and hw would u know dat it only takes a minute 2 disclose? I agree with the pple dat says the guy died let's not nw judge hm and let hm rest in peace.

i can imagine his exes panicking, but with all due respect this should have been discolsed in time.,if not publicly to his family atleast

      exactly!!

  • Stan - 2012-03-06 09:50

I wish these journalists could learn to report correctly. No one dies of Aids... People die of opportunistic ailments that come with being infected by HIV (TB, fever etc) ...

      Gcwabe.KaMavovo - 2012-03-06 09:58

It's all in an attempt to sensationalize things. The heading is inaccurate, but the article itself says "aids-related complications". It's disgusting journalism if you ask me.

      blackjew69 - 2012-03-06 10:48

headlines are meant to make capture the reader, Ask people who read the crazy dailysun, Its all in the headline.

      Sean - 2012-03-06 13:31

He had Aids and that is the truth !! I think it was put the right way and that`s how it should be ! Obvioulsy you die from ``aids-related complications`` , He still had AIDS and that is why he died !!

      Pharaoh - 2012-03-08 14:39

Sean clearly you don't understand the concept maybe it's above your level of comprehension. There is no desease called Aids but a collection of symptoms.

  • lhenama - 2012-03-06 09:50

So what, why does it have to be a public issue if he discloses his status or not. Its very unfair of people to always be expecting things as they want them. Yes he died of HIV related diseases, so what, can you please let the guy really rest in peace. Its very hard that people want to be pleased in every aspect when they've got their own issues to handle. Imagine his family now, they have to deal with him being sick and not knowing what is wrong with him and when they finally find out what was the main problem they still have to tell the public, for what, they've had to deal with enough already. People must stop being judgmental, that's the main problem that people do not want to come out and get help because of such expectation created which is really none of anyone's business its unfair. May his soul rest in peace.

      nhandunge - 2012-03-06 10:14

@ lhenama, may his soul rest in peace indeed, but can you just imagine how many ladies are out there how might have been infected by the late, educated or not educated they still go and make the same mistake, so to me he should have at-least told some1 in his family why keeping it for himself and now those left behind are busy asking themselves a lot of question i mean seriously its not on

      Deon - 2012-03-06 10:33

He might have lived another 30 years if he took ARV's. Hiv/Aids can be controlled, could be like high cholesterol or hypertension, just another chronic disease.

      Andile Magaba Magaba - 2012-03-06 10:39

@ Ihenama: amen to that. Yes he might have died of HIV related illness, how is that a public affair? The family didnt have to disclose.@nhandunge: protecting oneself from infection is that persons responsibility. One person cannot blame the other for being infected not unless of course it was rape or intentional or anything along those lines. You are responsible for your own safety

      blackjew69 - 2012-03-06 10:51

Did you know how many grannies and mothers alike in th erural area have died of HIV related illness, women who were not once unfaithful, thanks to people like "Thabang'' . Their failure to disclose, making the old and illiterate grannies and moms, end up coming into contact with the infected blood while doing home based care of fools like these. he was nothing but a self loving prick IF he actually didnt inform his family.

      Hugo - 2012-03-06 11:43

      Deon AZT?

  • Keith - 2012-03-06 10:05

precisely why some infected people does not want to disclose. the Lebese family must be congratulated for disclosing the status of their son be it after his death or nor. For us who do not suffer from this ailment I urge you to be more compassionate and considerate. Our insensitive comments reminds me of the Scripture that urges those of us without sin to trow the first stone.

  • Stanton - 2012-03-06 10:09

Eish SAFA , I hope you have this one covered I see counter lawsuites coming your way for not knowing this mans HIV status , it has and did put many players lives at risk. RIP Thabang Lebese

  • Herman - 2012-03-06 10:15

He obviously didn't take his antivirals. How bizarre.

      Boer - 2012-03-06 10:44

I still don't know why the taxpayer should pay for ARV's. People make bad choices and the taxpayers must come to the resque.....again and again.

  • Yolandè Rwaai - 2012-03-06 10:21

Thought as much. No offense but soccer stars are known for being promiscuous & unfortunately, using protection seems be the last thing on their minds. Nonetheless may hi soul R.I.P

      Siyabulela Zulu - 2012-03-29 17:04

For now all the people must go to check their status, otherwise we'll loose our relatives. Its must.

  • elleattwell73 - 2012-03-06 10:24

I have lost respect for Douglas by simply reading his comment. We don't need people like him. Douglas says "And how many people did he infect with Aids/HIV, knowing that he was ill, but not revealing his condition? I don't imagine he abstained from sex. Such people are dangerous, stupid, amoral, and anti-social.". I ask how do You know that he infected people? how do You know he wasn't abstaining from sex? I say people like Douglas are dangerous, stupid, amoral, and anti-social.

      blackjew69 - 2012-03-06 11:26

@ elle - Its simple logic, if he didnt disclose to his family, people who he should really trust/love, it paints a picture of a person who cared about no else than himself. Anyway, issue here is living with HIV. Do you know how many grannies and mothers alike in the rural/urban areas have died of HIV related illness, women who were not once unfaithful, thanks to people like "Thabang'' . Their failure to disclose, making the old and illiterate grannies and moms, end up coming into contact with the infected blood while doing home based care of fools like these. he was nothing but a self loving prick (IF) he actually didnt inform his family.

      blackjew69 - 2012-03-06 11:30

Everyone should know of their status, and hence disclose it. we have heard of a couple loosing their child/children to Aids, when they go tst they find they are both Negative, only find out their maid has been using the children toothbrushes right before the kids use them. If this maid had gone for testing, she would have known thereafter not to share toothbrushes, syringes etc. Its all in ignorance and self loving.

  • Jim - 2012-03-06 11:49

Most deaths are attributable to cause and effect of AIDS, in S.A. However people cover it up, as in this case.

  • Bhut' - 2012-03-06 12:19

So what.... what are we as the public supposed to do with that information????

  • mmokoatle - 2012-03-06 12:29

I honestly don't understand why people have to know athother's HIV status if they are not even going to be in contact with the infected person. It's only right to disclose to those who will be directly affected, like the medical professionals at Helen Joseph; in this case. I also don't think it's a matter of our concern to go as far as Thabang Lebese's "bedroom habits". That's not our business as we were not directly affected by that. If a person discloses publicly, how is that going to assist their health? Are we going to take the virus away by just knowing? Will it automatically make them swallow their ARVs as directed by their medical professionals? Are we going to prescribe or even donate something that will help them live longer? Not at all! Lets stop being judgmental and let those infected deal with this in the way that is suitable to them and take good care of our own bodies. If one starts to have an encounter with his/her partner without protection, it's their own fault if they get infected. Your body's responsibility lies with you. Even the rape cases and newborn babies make it without being infected now of late due to the readily available ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY. Lets just live our own lives responsibly and be proactive in taking good care of ourselves, leave another life to it's rightful owner to live as they please!

  • Rebaone - 2012-03-06 12:32

AIDS is no longer feared in the world so i wonder why he did not disclose his status to his family or was he afraid that his lovers could know that there is a possibility that they might have it. He chose to be silent regarding his status and that is the reaon why it killed him in such a short time as he was being eaten inside by the fact that his family did not know his conditions, and if his family did not know that means that he was not taking the ARV's.

  • BabyBash Tshesejane - 2012-03-06 12:35

I admire the family for coming out and disclose and not keeping it a secret. RIP Lebese

  • tjmosia - 2012-03-06 13:44

PEOPLE can we just all stop acting like wer perfect!!!saying u wonder how many girls he infected is rubbish, where did he took it...from air?NO,from someone who thought sleeping with a celeb is a big thing.if you like sleeping with celebs this is one of the results...they will infect you as they took it from someone like you who sleeps with celebs.it is reprted that he was active in HIV campains this should've indicated to his family that maybe his +,anywy his dead(RIP).the question is u as ur alive what do u learn from this???it's for the 1st time, remebr Sizwe Motaung,ect...yet it keeps on happening.to me it boils to 1 thing:dont eat rotten food at expensive places, rather buy gud food at cheap places=dont sleep with khanyi M(or any celeb) who look all that yet theyr sick, rather take some1 from bumdus(cheap place) yet shes a virgin(or not sick)!!

  • Craig - 2012-03-08 14:52

HIV should be a notifiable disease and anybody caught having unsafe sex after they have been informed of their positive result should be arrested and charged with homicide.

      Pharaoh - 2012-03-09 20:36

Craig HIV is not a disease but a harmless virus falls under the family of retroviruses. I know of cases in US where your proposed legislation failed to prosecute 'HIV positive' people who were aware of their 'HIV status' when sleeping with 'HIV negative people'. Are you aware of the disclamer on the HIV antibodies test kits where the manufacture clearly states the test is not for the use to diagnose? Now ask yourself why?
