SA soccer plunged into crisis

2012-07-17 10:25

Johannesburg - Refereeing in SA is in crisis on Tuesday after all but one of the country's top match officials failed their pre-season fitness tests, reports the Sowetan.

Only Daniel Bennett - who is earmarked for potential Soccer World Cup action in two years' time - passed Sunday's physical tests at the start of the annual pre-season workshop from the list of an elite panel of officials.

A total of 14 of the 25 referees who underwent the test failed and by rights are now ineligible to officiate at matches in the PSL or the NFD for the next six months.

SA Soccer is such a joke. This is why I don't watch SA soccer

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:14

seventh richest in the world by revenue. Most experts put the standard between league 1 and the english championship.Note that there are only two euro leagues that match the english premiership namely La Liga and Serie A. Bundesliga and the french league one as well as the dutch league are between the championship and premiership in standard. most leagues in euro are between league 1 and championship which puts them at par with PSL.mind you the PSL is only 16 years old.The chiefs and Pirates derby is ranked at number 25.Number one is madrid and barcellona.Again note that all the teams featured in the top 50 derbies in the world are atleast 60-70 years old. Most are 100 years old.The only other african derby is the egyptian one.Egypt soccer turned pro atlest 2 decades before SA soccer did.The PSL is only a member of an organization whose members are the english premiership, bundesliga etc.I know that its hard for white supremacists to swallow this facts.

So the money is there yet we can't string together a team to beat Botswana on a regular basis. Too much greed methinks to put real money into developing young talent. Same ols same old with SA unfortunately. Same as that racist slur....

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-17 14:16

@ Misendeni. SA Cricket no 2 in the world. Proteas reguarly beat all the top playing countries. Only joke about SA cricket was Gereld Majola. Ja....Thought that would shut you up !

      @rob and Msindeni=Once a racist, always a racist.

      MarkSchrade1980 - 2012-07-17 15:29

Poor comparison there..... How can you compare a top team such as the Proteas with Bafana? Ignorance is not bliss my friend

      zukisani.mkunqwana - 2012-07-19 12:34

im a big cricket fan,but a huge huge football supporter , here is a question; what have the Proteas won ? rankings dont say much without accolades my friends, Portugal were once ranked above Italy and france in fifa rankings , but Italy and france are the better teams better team by far they dont eat from the same bowl with Portugal. so why would you defend a team without any accolades to show. cricket SA and Boxing SA they are all cut from the same cloth of corruption only difference is that BSA has champions in their ranks. dont come here bragging about being top ranked out of 65 countries worldwide. then those guys from the former Transkei who are world champions in sheep shearing, will brag too, then it will be a Circus

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-07-17 10:42

This is actually hilarious... Football is a lost cause in SA but to be fair cricket is also going nowhere and the rugby unions are screwing up the game with their stupid rules.

    I wonder why...........

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:25

here is why. 18 out of 25 refs failed the physical fitness test and as a professional organization,SAFA and PSL have to bench them for the next six months. Most of them probably never bothered to train during the break which is why they failed this time around.get it ?

  • james.burn.963 - 2012-07-17 10:49

  • sharon.hamilton.737001 - 2012-07-17 11:12

Soccer and why I don;t watch it. It's the second most corrupt sport in the world after cricket, match fixing by players, match fixing by referees, match fixing by coaches, match fixing by FIFA, and all those ridiculous theatrics when a player is slightly nudged or touched, they should be awarded "Football Oscars" for their efforts, this is all just European football the so called best in the world, THEN there's AFRICAN football which takes all of the above to higher levels with liberal doses of unprofessionalism.

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:04

      you mean lack of sponsorship

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-17 13:00

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:22

yes.SA soccer was deracialized in the 60s.He is indeed one of our stars. anymore race related questions?

      Muffin_man_can - 2012-07-17 12:34

@Hugo, that must be why there are so many white and coloured players in bafana? Lmao

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:42

in order to have white and coloured players in Bafana you should have white and coloured players in the PSL.for the most part, young talent is unearthed in schools. If you look around most white schools dont have soccer teams.if they do,no one really cares.Believe it or not the standard in the PSL is very high. You cant just play soccer with your buddies then think you can play in the PSL,NO even if you are white. As for coloured players, ask yourself one question, why do the cape teams which started off as predominantly colored now have mostly black players?if Ajax CT and santos only have one or two coloreds, where do you expect the rest to come from?

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-17 13:03

When whites played the standard was much higher. Even the " leftover whites " from the early ninetees, like Tovey, Tinkler, Fish and the ageing McGregor were in a different class.

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 13:11

mark fish was reclassified as coloured. so BB won the world cup then?btw tinkler is asst coach at wits,if whites are so good why didnt they have whites there(head coach was de sa,white)???

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-07-17 13:16

Why should rugby develop black players but soccer don't have to do that? Quality in psl.what are you smoking?

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-17 13:27

To be fair Hugo and in all seriousness, I watched many games on TV in the 80's when soccer was more integrated and the standard WAS much higher then today. I never missed a Sundowns game if I could help it and BENNET Masinga was in my eyes a really gifted footballer. S.A. soccer lost its way in the mid 90's. Bafana, had it existed, would have really been able to put out a good team in the 80's.

  • JacquesClaassen - 2012-07-17 12:08

LMAH! Now I understand why you want a piece of the rugby pie!

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:21

piece of rugby pie?no thanks we will stick to soccer. The football fifa world cup is the biggest event in the world.Rugby is only popular in SA,australia and NZ.we will stick to the much more lucrative soccer and leave the'organized chaos' to the supremacists like you.

      Muffin_man_can - 2012-07-17 12:29

@ Hugo: It still remains to be seen if bafana can even qualify for the next world cup, so don't count your chickens before they hatch ;)

      JacquesClaassen - 2012-07-17 12:35

@HugoMabasa Why is my comment to sharp for you? Yes Football is the biggest sport in the World, but you are mistaken if you believe Rugby is only popular in South Africa, New-Zealand and Australia. Then by your own criteria for stating your argument you should then want a piece of rugby pie in South Africa as the players are paid more, the unions have more money, the stadiums are better, the rugby union is run far better and has far less scandals and finally at least our National Team can win a game and is known across the World as a competent team. That said my comment was set a a pun not a true argument, but I would expect such a response from the average soccer supporter.

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:35

whether BB qualifies or not soccer is still the most popular hence sponsors trip over themselves fighting over rights to sponsor.Rugby is not very popular.Infact Forbes released the richest sporting franchises and no rugby team made it to the top 50.it was mainly soccer, baseball, american football and NBA.even if we are not one of the best, the fact that we participate in more lucrative events means more money .The top earning sportsmen in SA are soccer players, excluding sponsorship deals.its just the numbers.

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 12:51

sa soccer is the seventh richest in the world by revenue,so your assertion that unions are run better than safa falls flat.you went on to say that stadiums are better,um hello, soccer uses most of the stadia that were used during the world cup so i dont know what you mean by that.you also say rugby franchises pay better.Katlego mphela reportedly earns around 400k per month.Teko modise owns a bently,m6 and range rover,he has never played in europe my friend.(if you dont believe me look it up!) the average salary paid by chiefs and pirates is around 70k whilst for sundowns its around 100k a month. Also dont forget that rugby in SA is as as time and apartheid really took care of it.psl as you know it is only 16 years having been formed in 1996.Kaizer chiefs reportedly has 16 million supporters in SADC.how many supporters do you think the blue bulls have?does anyone know the stormers in zim?

      JacquesClaassen - 2012-07-17 13:04

@HugoMabasa Dude you should check your fact as I know them to be false, how do I know this, because it's my job to know such things. Loftus, Newlands and Kings Park are ALL owned by there rugby teams, not by the City, Football teams pay a premium to play there and basically rent the rights from the Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd and same with the Sharks and Western Province. You want to compare salaries, Victor Matfield was paid R2mil p/y by the Bulls Company, Bryan Habanna left the Bulls to earn R 4mil p/y, this excludes sponsors and National Duty fee. South Africa are the seventh richest hahahahaha proof it as I can promise you France, England, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Greece ( Thats 8 just out of my ass) all have more money than South Africa. Lastly, yes no one in Zim knows the Bulls, but know one in New Zealand, Australia, or Europe knows or cares about the Chiefs, countries of far more importance than Zim or any African nation. You have no clue dude!

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-17 13:06

Rugby is SA's no 1 sport. Bufoona are a national disgrace as is the standard of sa soccer.

      msendi - 2012-07-17 13:08

There is nothing called a Rugby World Cup. Only a handful of countries play that game, not the whole world like soccer. Soccer is still, and will always be the most beautiful game ever…

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-07-17 13:18

Where don't the teams have their own stadia? Waiting for a hand out from the whiteys again. Go and play on your dirt patch.

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 13:20

do you know what by revenue means??? go to the PSL website!! both supersport and sabc signed deals in billions ! know vodacom is also throwing a billion to two teams.Irvin khoza said orlando pirates makes about 500 million per annum in profits.that was early 2000. 400k x 12 =4.8million rands.teko 's deals in 2008 (mc donlads, samsung ,nike and audi) gave him 2mill hard cash. benni earns around 350-400k per month at pirates.VV was earning 600k per month at chiefs. His own were were the teams in his own country dont have that kind of money.you say soccer teams pay a premium to play in rigby stadia but you conviniently forgot green point, fnb, mbombela, moses mabhida, peter mokaba, rustenburg, nelson mandela bay!!why did you forget these?

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 13:35

to a white supremacist ,other african countires do not matter but to us they do.if no one knows kaizer chiefs in europe, why do we keep on getting applications from european coaches.VV,who was sacked by chiefs will be in charge of a team that will be plying its trade in the uefa, the highest standard of euro soccer.btw VV guided his country to the semis in world cup 94.How about neskeens, sundowns coach?do you know him?foppe de haan?rudi krol?if no one knows about sa soccer why do we have man u,man city, tottenham hotspur COMING to our shores to play the likes of amazulu? why did a chinese team invite moroka swallows in a pre season tourney(drogba plays in china) you are the one who is clueless dude!oh before i forget why did voda throw a bill at both chiefs and pirates?did i mention that the SA derby is at number 25 most famous derbies in the world?number one being barcelona and real madrid.arsenal vs liverpool at number 42,corinthians vs santos 26,spartak vs cska moscow 23,just to mention but these.now note:kaizerchifs is only 32 years. Most teams in that list are 60-70 years.PSL is only 16 years.90% of those league turned pro atleast 2-3 decades earlier. Most of the derbies are known to turn violent. Not the SA derby.now my friend what have you got to say?huh?

      msendi - 2012-07-17 13:48

@koos.vandermerwe.338…Are you that guy from that Chicken Licken advert? A lot happened while you were underground. I don't think that all the beautiful soccer stadia we have in SA belong to the people of your race…

      hugo.mabasa - 2012-07-17 14:00

why delete my comments!!! anyway if you think no one cares about sa soccer abroad thats your problem but how about i drop kick a few fast ones : SA derby is ranked at number 25 in the top 50 most popualar soccer derbies in the world.Arsenal vs liverpool 42 , spartna vs cska moscow 23,santos vs corinthians 27,just to mention but these.you say footie teams pay a premium to use certain stadia, well my friend I have to break it to you that, that no longer happens except for loftus. We now have our own namely orlando stadium, mbombela, fnb, moses mabhida, green point, peter mokaba, nelson mandela, rustenburg.all these are world class ,world cup stadia except for orlando stadium. We have other smaller but good quality such dobsonville, harry gwala and maybe athlone. We used to pay for newlands, loftus(sundowns uses it occasionally)puma in durban, ellis park (which else?) that is no longer the case my friend.if no one cares about sa soccer in europe why did ajax amsterdam form a partnership with ajax ct.why is the psl a member of premier football leagues which comprise the bundesliga and english premiershipship?VV,The sacked kaizer chiefs coach landed a job at belgrade which will be playing in the eufa?(he earned 18 million at chiefs in 3 years at 600k a month!

  • danmotaung - 2012-07-17 16:16

I hope among those who failed, is the man himself "Mr. Qubule". Jeeer, that guy is useless when it comes to officiating. I am sure there is clause in their contract that states that they need to keep fit all the time and not only during the playing season. If they fail, fire them anbd bring the new blood with a different attitude into the game. Oh by the way, do it at the lower levels as well (i.e. refresher courses and physical training).

  • coachsean.asp.1 - 2012-07-19 07:37

Referees are supposed to keep up with strikers from both ends of the field. A mere fact that they cant run casts a huge shadow on their ability to make correct decisions. Imagine the poor unfit refs muscles competing to get oxygen with his brain and then he still needs to call a good decision. Back to the drawing board... Stomach in.... Chest out! .... ;)
