Rooney's brother joins MLS

New York - Major League Soccer announced the signing of an England playmaker named Rooney on Tuesday, but it's John Rooney, Wayne's 20-year-old brother, who is set to play in America later this year.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney's younger brother, pegged as a midfielder, will take part at the MLS five-day combine along with other prospects starting Friday at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

John Rooney spent time with the MLS Seattle Sounders last season as well as the Portland Timbers, who have joined Vancouver as new MLS clubs this year.

The younger Rooney, who will be available for selection at the MLS draft of unclaimed talent on January 13 at Baltimore, has played for England's low-level Macclesfield Town and had a test with England's Derby County in 2009.

Vancouver has the top draft pick followed by Portland, D.C. United, Chivas USA and Philadelphia.

Other global prospects taking part in the combine workouts include Ecuadoran forward Victor Estupinan, Argentine midfielder Martin Rivas, Uruguayan midfielder Paolo Cardozo and Ecuadoran midfielder Marlon Ganchozo.
