'Ref errors part of the fun'

Franz Beckenbauer (File)

Berlin - German legend Franz Beckenbauer pleaded on Wednesday for the rules of football to be left as they are, warts and all, because refereeing errors can be part of the sport's charm.

"Leave football as simple and as clear as it is, together with all its mistakes," Beckenbauer, a member of the executive committee of FIFA, the sport's governing body, told the German daily Bild.

"The 1966 Wembley goal is part of football legend. We've been talking about it for over 40 years in England and Germany, and probably still will be in another 40 years. Just like Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal (in 1986)."

The comments followed some radical proposals on Tuesday by Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal, including doing away with throw-ins, having two referees on the pitch and cameras replacing linesmen for off-side decisions.

But Beckenbauer, 64, a World Cup winner for West Germany both as player and coach, said that even with different camera angles, off-side decisions can be so tight that "at the end of the day only a human being has to decide."

He conceded, however, that another official behind the goal line might help.

"It is being tested right now in the Europa League, apparently with success.

"Players are holding and shoving less in the box because they know very well that someone right next to the goal is watching them very closely.

"This goal referee would probably have seen Thierry Henry's handball in (France's) World Cup qualifier against Ireland."

And he said that it would also have meant that Bayern Munich, of which he is honorary president, would have had its crucial 89-minute goal in last month's Champions League last-16 home leg against Fiorentina disallowed.

Replays showed scorer Miroslav Klose was yards offside.

Having won the first leg 2-1 in Munich thanks to the controversial decision, Bayern went through on the away goals rule in Fiorentina after Arjen Robben and captain Mark van Bommel scored in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat.

The result meant that the Bavarian giants, currently riding high at the top of the Bundesliga, went through on away goals after the score finished 4-4 on aggregate.

Beckenbauer says this now because he is retired and no longer himself playing top class football.I bet he would change his tune if he was playing today and losing big money in his pocket because of poor refereeing decisions.Football must move with the times like all other major sport codes are doing and embrace some of the technological advances suitable to the game.

The Kaiser say's what Sepp wants to hear. All wanking under the same table. Soccer is subject to changes, the scores are to low, but they are all shit scared losing their job. Super 14 showed that their changes of the rules created a very much more lucrative game and will get more and more support world wide. Soccer starts sucking. Get rid of these old farts. Increase the size of the goals by 50cm all round that will make a diff.

Its not some TV game , its a game played by humans( who also make mistakes) refereed by humans - stuff technology - if you want technology become obese like play with your xBox or whatever it's called

It’s a bit silly that FiFA has allowed other aspects (ball design, boots, jerseys and players training methods) of the game to be enhanced by technology whilst the referees are still expected to make error free decisions with no technological help; yes the referees have been given those ear pieces which by the way are just for communicating. "Ref errors part of the fun" my foot

Part of the fun?! Don't be rediculous! The sport is loosing face with people new to the sport with players like Thierry Henry and the like committing obvious fouls and the refereeing system allowing it at present. With the technology available, not only for referees, but for viewers as well, why not make use of it and move into the 21st century!

What a pathetic attitude.........I'm sorry, but it's NOT okay to win or lose a game, Beckenbauer, on the officials' shortcomings in the job that they are entrusted with and, if field technology can overcome any loop-holes in the laws of football, then USE IT! The level of senility in the higher echelons of FIFA's executive obviously knows no boundaries. Mind-boggling, to say the least!

I agree with Herr Beckenbauer. And he can talk, having won the world cup as captain and again as coach. If we do change things, it may be like having extra officials behind the goals. Leave the camera's out of it, referees must be highly trained and highly fit. The offside rule must be scrapped - you must be squint to be able to call the offside correctly. Referees get it right most of the time, all credit to them.

They should have changed the rules ages ago to make the game exciting. It can only be described as the one of the most boring games to watch

Until Germany gets knocked out of the world cup from ``A hand of God``or a Thierry Henry handball assist then he will be the first to scream. It OK for now as it did not affect us Attitude, ask the Irish if they would like a TV Official

The worst performance ever by a South African team in the Tri Nations! 5 losses out of 6, the most tries ever scored against us and the first time the Wallabies have won in Bloemfontein in 80 years. The problem will not go away by ignoring it. Time for the coaching staff to go, says McLook.
