Katlego Mphela (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Rangers manager Walter Smith revealed on Tuesday his interest in signing two of South Africa's World Cup stars Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela.

Talks have already taken place between Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain and representatives of striker Mphela and defender Khumalo, at the behest of the Rangers boss.

"We are seriously considering both these players," Smith told the Scottish Sun. "I believe they could fit in well for us.

"Contact has been made, but we'll need to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks."

Khumalo, 23, and Mphela, 24, both scored against France in the finals, are rated at 1.5 million pounds (2.3 million dollars) each.

Supersport United defender Khumalo, capped 14 times, has reportedly also attracted the attention of Tottenham.

Former Strasbourg striker Mphela, who has 35 caps, was the Premier Soccer League's top scorer last season with 17 goals in 30 games for Mahelodi Sundowns.

Rangers have also reportedly moved to sign Croatia international striker Nikica Jelavic to replace Kris Boyd, who recently moved to Middlesbrough.

the SPL is s better league then the PSL and the fact the play in champions league or europa league will help their careers getting decent experience that they wont get here.

I think they should go to Rangers first. Prove themselves there and then move on to EPL, just so that they can sort of gradually up the pace. Putting them into EPL straight away would literally be a baptism of fire. The difference between PSL and EPL is to great. It may affect their morale if they cannot adapt quickly enough. SPL should be a nice stepping stone for them. But best of luck to both of them. Good players. I think Killer would excel in the Scottish league.

if they sign with Rangers they can kiss their careers goodbye, it's the crappest league where year after year two teams dominant by atless fifteen pionts clear every season Celtic/Rangers can't even comptite in the champions league.

To Mr Journalist: whats up with half baked stories of Mphela is going, or Mphela's Agent missing in action, come on you can do better than that we want real story not fishing story, get out there and do some work not lazy journalism.

My pick for best defender and striker in the Bafana squad. Would be nice if they could both move to the EPL.
