Johannesburg - Fans will pay more to watch Premier Soccer League matches this season.

This was announced by PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza after a PSL Board of Governors meeting in Sandton on Thursday.

And the PSL boss is confident of a bumper season coming on the heels of South Africa hosting one of the most successful World Cup finals in history.

"We want to maintain the spirit of the World Cup," said Khoza.

"But supporters have been paying R20 to attend our games for the past eight years. Costs have increased in that period. For example it costs a club R500 000 just to stage a PSL match. We have no option but to increase our prices. It is always unfortunate when one has to make increases but there is no way we can continue to charge R20 for 90 minutes of high quality entertainment any longer."

Although Khoza could not give a figure it is likely that fans will have to pay R40 to attend PSL matches this season.

The PSL are charging between R50 and R100 for next Saturday’s Telkom Charity Cup.

"We have already sold 56 000 tickets for the event even before we know which four PSL clubs will be competing," said Khoza.

"That is amazing and shows that if we provide top class entertainment the market is there."

The league are expected to ratify increases at the PSL executive meeting before the new Absa Premiership kicks off at the end of August.

The PSL also signed an agreement with the South African Players Union agreeing to a minimum wage and basic rights for players.

"The clubs have agreed to look after players rights," said Khoza. "It is an important and a big step forward for soccer in our country."

The PSL were praised by Cosatu for the unity shown during the World Cup. "Cosatu sent us a letter congratulating us on the unity and spirit during the World Cup finals and urged us to maintain this positive mood," said Khoza.

Khoza said the PSL were also keen to benefit from the new stadiums built for the World Cup. But he said that he could not force clubs to utilise the new stadiums in Nelspruit, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Durban purpose build for the global showpiece.

"We as the PSL do not know what agreements and conditions have been entered into by stadiums and management companies. We would like to encourage clubs to use the new facilities but cannot force clubs into playing in venues before we have all the details at our disposal," he said.

The controversial issue surrounding the South African Football Association and the disputed annual general meeting held last September where Khoza was pipped by Kirstin Nematandani as Safa president was again put on hold.

Safa implemented new changes to their constitution in June.

"We cannot comment until SAFA furnish us with details and we get clarity," said Khoza.

The First Division will kick-off on September 11.

I think it will be to every one's best interest if the PSL teams jointly own share these former world cups stadiums as their home grounds. This will help in the attraction on the required number of people expected to come and watch the games. Like say for example Sundowns , Chefs jointly share FNB stadium as their home ground , in a month of three weekends of soccer on average we can pull 40 000 tickets at R50 ( 40000 * 50 = 2 000 0000) * 3 = 6 000 000 I think this will be a good starting point other than hearing that our soccer clubs can not pay for the use of the stadiums. With the right marketing goals and strategies Soccer in SA bases for joy to our mind and souls; I will not like to dream of this taking place but to see some thing being actioned.

If the PLS what need to do if they want to grow as a brand.they need to improve allot of things first, such as improve the quality of play , improve the coverage of the game make people want to go to the game rather then watching it on TV and teams should look after they poor and old surporters by giving them discounted season tickets. I wouldnt mind if an old guy sit next to me having paid R20 while I paid R50.Would you?? As you are saying its a brand like any other product , they cant just expect me to be happy they increase the price while they havent inprove the product.

Ya ne, I guess you guys will stay happy people.Anyway Im not against them increasing the price. But you have to consider a couple of things such as how will the price increase alone improve the PSL or the quality of the game? my answer is No it wont. Some of these players already earn allot of money, they just need to play. We have the richest league in Africa.Look its simple what they should do is make the game more interesting, I need to get more for my R20. You know what I think that both the PSL and SAFA are using the spirit of the world cup to sneek these things through and hoping that we are still high from the WC.They are doing the very samething Rugby is doing, due to their greed they have cut out the poor rugby surporters.Oom Kobus cant watch rugby live or on TV unless he has DSTV. Isnt soccer heading in the same direction???

@Chiefs faithfull and Cas you folks are so funny! How do you expect PSL to grow as a brand if you still wanna pay R20. During 2010 WC you guys paid more for games which were not even worth your money. Thru bad or good runs over years we as Bucs fans we stay supportive to the team. Orlando Pirates FC is bigger than its losses and underachievement thats why we are all there for the team.

Doyou understand the meaning of being loyal to a team. Loyal fans are not only fans that can AFFORD!!! to go to the staduims. I can be loyal but if cant AFFORD tDo you understand the meaning of being loyal to a team. Loyal fans are not only fans that can AFFORD!!! to go to the stadiums. I can be loyal but if can’t AFFORD to go then I will WATCH the game somewhere else. Can I ask you a question , does these teams like Chiefs and Pirates have special packages for pensioners, these pensioners can’t afford R50 let alone the means to get to the stadium. They have spend allot of money over the years supporting these teams, making Mr. Khoza a rich man.o go then I will WATCH the game somewhere else. Can I ask you a question , does these teams have special packages for pensioners, these pensioners cant afford R50 let alone the means to get to the staduim,They have sepnd allot of money over the years suproting these teams , making Mr. Khoza a rich man.

Typical Bucs fans , still loyal after many years of achieving what??, LOL!!!!!!!!Be carefull the germans were also loyal to Hitler not to mention the boere being Loyal aparthied look what happened.LOL!!!!!! On a seriouse note, Bucaneer before you juge peoples loyalty first read and understand what aotllotwe means, he states that we couldnt fill the staduims meaning he does attend matches, secondly his statement makes sense,LOOK chief If I only have a R15 this means that I cannot go to the staduims whether I want to.Whats the next best thing, I can afford to buy two beers and where will be the best place to enjoy it , yes man at a tarvern, if six of us get together we can have a good time watching the game.Theres also another thing which you need to remember things have changed you are now going to need more than just a R50 there are things like petrol ,parking, beers & food at the staduim which is expensive for some of us.So you need about a R200 to have a good time at the staduim.Remember for some of your diehard loyal Bucuneer fans this is their weekly salary. So please dont insult peoples loyalty because you got it made.

I don’t know what’s more funny , the statement that high quality entertainment is being dished out or the fact that he is comparing the R50 people are willing to spend for the Charity Cup. With regards to the entertainment, just look at the standard of the Chiefs vs pirates derbies for the last two seasons, it was crap. Secondly Mr. Khoza people are willing to spend the R50 because, for allot of people it would be they first time at the New Soccer city/National /FNB Stadium. Plus you get to watch three games. Honestly who is willing to pay R50 for a game amazula vs Black Aces at the new Nelspruit staduim. Mr. Khoza lets be honest the only two teams that will benefit from this increase is Chiefs and Pirates even though their performance of late is nothing to write home about.
