Pirates oust Chiefs in shootout

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates clinched the inaugural Carling Black Label Cup at FNB Stadium, beating Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 in the lottery of a penalty shootout on Saturday afternoon.

The scores were deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes of the match.

Chiefs missed two penalty spots with Keegan Ritchie hitting the woodwork and Itumeleng Khune blasting the final kick over the posts, while Sameegh Doutie was the only player to miss for Pirates, having hit his shot wide of goal.

Pirates converted through Oupa Manyisa, Happy Jele, Rooi Mahamutsa and captain Lucky Lekgwathi while Siphiwe Tshabalala, Bernard Parker and Gerald Sibeko scored for Chiefs.

This is the second time in as many weeks that the Buccaneers have beaten their arch-rivals Amakhosi in two separate pre-season tournaments.

History was being made with the unique competition requiring fans to be the "coach" on the day and vote in their starting line-ups while also texting in the substitutions they wanted made during the match.

The game started half an hour later than the scheduled 3pm start with the organisers delaying kick-off because the a large number of the 77 000 supporters in attendance were still making their way to the venue.

There was a cracking start with Chiefs' Lucky Khune netting a goal as early as the fourth minute but it was disallowed by referee Victor Hlungwane because the striker used his hand to punch the ball past goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs instead of his head.

Pirates soon made their first inroads with winger Mark Mayambela slicing past Tefu Mashamaite on the right of defence before crossing to forward Chiukepo Msowoya in the box who tamely finished over the post.

Soon Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe placed a well-timed tackle on the edge of the box to deny Thulasizwe Mbuyane's attempted shot.

The half soon subsided to a dull affair with both sides opting to play a waiting game until the final play before the interval with gangly Chiefs striker S'thembiso Ngcobo finding space just outside the box to fashion a shot that went narrowly wide of goal.

There were stop-starts for the opening phase of the second-half with both sides introducing substitutes, Pirates bringing on winger Doutie for Msowoya and Chiefs introducing defender Keegan Ritchie and striker Dominic Mateba for Tlou Molekwane and Josta Dladla, respectively.

Chiefs also brought on Parker in the dying minutes of the game for his club debut having made a high profile signing from F.C. Twente in the Netherlands earlier in the week.

Doutie made an early impression with his first roam down the right flank nearly causing an own goal while Ritchie found himself in a scoring opportunity at the other end a few minutes later with the ball not cleared from a Chiefs corner only for his final shot to sail harmlessly over the bar.

The half also fizzled out with both sides lacking penetration in their final pre-season fixture before the 2011/12 domestic season next week.
