Pirates, Chiefs in R1bn deal

2012-05-17 14:17

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza has admitted that the total sponsorship agreement with his club, Kaizer Chiefs and Vodacom, which was on Thursday extended for five years, is around R1 billion.

While Khoza was reluctant to disclose exact figures, he did confirm that the sponsorship amount cleared the billion rand mark.

The chairperson added that the two teams are grateful for Vodacom's continued backing in these tough financial times.

"I can't say how much is the real figure because things change and figures change. This sponsorship is plus/minus R1 billion.

"We are happy that the game is growing and that what we have built in years will be strengthened in the next five years. We have to work hand in hand with all the stakeholders in the game.

"To Vodacom, I would say thank you for believing in us and we promise to continue doing the best in football in the country," Khoza concluded.

Faaark! Rather charge me less for my cellphone! It is like ABSA sponsor of the Boks - and bank costs stay sky-high!

      Neutedop - 2012-05-17 15:21

Oh yes, and I forgot, our men's hockey team is still sponsor-less. Come'on Vodacom!

      dhirshan.gobind - 2012-05-17 16:06

chiefs are useless and don't win anything. why should they get such a huge sponsorship. people are starving in this country and vodacom does this - there should be a law against such high sponsorships.

      louis.langenhoven - 2012-05-17 16:33

I am totally in line with these comments- sponsorships and advertisements actually come from our pockets but the service you get mostly sucks

      Freddy - 2012-05-17 16:48

It the same with cricket too. When players choose to hydrate on a particular energy drink, the money also comes from our pockets in that product we buy.

      SlegBliksem - 2012-05-17 18:06

ja nee die dawnerse chairmans van chiefs and pirates is obviaaasly pirate en chief fans....no wonder soccer fans only support 2 clubs in the country

  • cuthbert.murwisi - 2012-05-17 14:32

Somehow I feel Khoza is using the PSL chair to push his personal agenda at the expense of small clubs who are also stakeholders in the sport.

  • Will - 2012-05-17 14:41

How much goes to the club? How much to his pocket?

      revaro.winkler - 2012-05-17 14:51

qaurter bil to him qaurter bil to kaizer and the rest to the other stake holders and players

  • siya.jr - 2012-05-17 14:44

Vodacom must reduce the rates for us otherwise i'm going to port to MTN. Vodacom is reaping us off.

      Singatha - 2012-05-17 15:05

      Try Cell C bro. http://www.cellc.co.za/promotions/answering-the-call

  • Faizie - 2012-05-17 14:44

No wonder Jomo has been relegated, out of all proportion to either clubs worth to SA society. The ability to pay these vast sums needs to be investigated, also tax should be paid on whats is ineffect a gift

  • deonkeith.hughes - 2012-05-17 14:46

Cell C just dropped it's rates. They could possibly sponsor one of the Cape Town teams if we support Cell C. Keep the money in Cape town DEON

      Sango - 2012-05-18 10:30

I guess they don't want a team that is battling to stay in the top 8.

  • sikhulile.nkwelo - 2012-05-17 14:56

  • tshikare.makgoane - 2012-05-17 15:09

Whose responsibility is it to market other football clubs, Khoza or Motaung?

      neo.mokami - 2012-05-17 15:29

Every club has to market and sell itself, and the clubs supporters have a very huge role to play in that respect

  • Jeffrey - 2012-05-17 15:34

After 10 years of no trohpy, Khosa persuded family man Mutaung to give away games to restore pie-rat/orlando peanuts's reputation in the name of "we will loose sponserships"I saw this coming. how can you play derby using school boys. atmost, pirate won thier games when SHABA,Tinasha and YEYE were not playing, thus a record. Shame on you vodacom people are starving now you give all this money to soccer what a disgrace to give so much money to people that did not even perform in the world cup. It just shows you how much vodacom is making out of us to give over 1Bn to soccer

      Peter - 2012-05-17 17:26

  • bafo99 - 2012-05-17 16:04

This is not good for our soccer. Soon we'll be face with the same situation as to that of La Liga Spain wher the league is dominated by only to teams. Such amount of money must be directed to development not just for spending in purcharsing of players who will rot on the bench. Motsepe puts Millions into Sundowns every year and what does he get, nothing

So Mr Khoza how about you donate the Black label sponsor to Jomo Cosmos n Motaung the Hollard to the team of you choice(share this wealth with other teams)

  • katleho.mdlalose - 2012-05-17 18:32

people shouldnt hate. vodacom spends R1 billion in sports sponsorship, it gets tenfold more in increased revenue. and what makes people think that the R1 billion is not going to good use. do you know how much chiefs and pirates spend on development. do you know how much each team spends on social responsibiliy, do u even know how much it costs to run a soccer team. instead of just being jealous and complaining all the time, be happy that corporates are putting money in sports.

      Johnny - 2012-05-17 23:14

But 1billion for 2 teams is not good for the development of football in this country

  • sdesani - 2012-05-17 22:30

is this even legal...*sniff*sniff*, a rat?

  • Lebogang - 2012-05-18 09:41

pirates and chiefs keep millions entertained and south african soccer is nothing without these two soweto giants, infact R 2 billion it should be, If it was manchester united people would not be complaining but because its south african teams we complain. we are our own worst enemy.

      margo.george.18 - 2012-05-18 11:51

Atleast Pirates got a star behind their name and Manchester Unt got 2 CL and 19 league title.Chiefs got only 2 PSL titles

  • Lebogang - 2012-05-18 09:47

@jeffrey,clearly u r dumb as they come. for an adult like you to make such a stupid statement it is worrying, when was the last time chiefs won a title. chiefs is a useless team and pirates a winning team at the moment. get used to that cause tommorrow u will be one dissapointed loser.

  • margo.george.18 - 2012-05-18 11:33

Congratulations to these teams but why do they always get preference.
