Pele: Messi still has to improve

2012-01-21 07:17

Rio de Janeiro - Pele says Lionel Messi still needs to improve at international level before he can be considered the greatest football player of all time, and needs to score more goals to come close to matching the Brazilian great.

The 24-year-old Messi has already won the Ballon d'Or as the world's best player for three straight years. But in an interview with French newspaper Le Monde published Friday, the 71-year-old Pele says "when Messi's scored 1 283 goals like me, when he's won three World Cups, we'll talk about it."

Although many observers consider Pele or Diego Maradona to be the greatest ever, Messi's form for Barcelona has him being mentioned in the same group. But Messi has not shone for Argentina in big tournaments.

LMFAO BRENT ARE YOU DUMB OT CANT READ.MAYBE READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN AND YOU WILL NOTICE WHY PELE IS SAYING.HE HAS WON THREE WORLD CUPS YOU IDIOT. MESSI IS GOOD BUT IF YOU DONT HAVE A WORLD CUP TO YOUR NAME ITS USELESS. NI MATTER HOW GOOD OF A CLUB FOOTBALL PLAYER YOU CAN BE

I once heard he mixes his pills. He takes night pills during the day and day pills at night. He also said Neymar is better than Messi. He said Robinho is the best. Old man.

Pele, come on, are you really making these comments objectively man? Its not Leo's fault that his team mates at international level are not up to scratch, and it is as clear as daylight that the boy is a genius with the football when playing with footballers of the calliber of most of his Barca team mates! Pele has never had the speed, ball control and skill that Leo has, I have no doubt in my mind that he is going to win Baloon d'or at least 4 or 5 more times if he remains fit. Pele must stop hating and at least appreciate that during his times he was the best, but Leo is out of this world

Pele was obviously very good, I dunno how he managed it but it seems to me he won 3 world cups all by himself? This last argument is actually what sinks his whole argument. Pele you were great but Messi is also great and the mere fact that you have to make comments like this shows me you feel threatened by Messi and is trying to prove your greatness to us. Your soccer skills were clearly better than your arguing ones. I guess the next thing you'll be telling us is that C Ronaldo is actually quite useless since Portugal really battles in world cups?

Reality is so long as Messi doesn't win the world cup...he will always live under Maradona's shadow...the truth is Messi is the best player, maybe Pele needs to look at the video clips of him playing compared to Messi, i'm sure he might just restructure his statement after that

  • Mohammed Afzal Jhetam - 2012-01-21 10:08

Pele, possibly the greatest footballer of all time is saying this because, I think, his scared... The tide is shifting, we going to see a new greatest footballer of all time once Messi wins the world cup in Pele's home ground, Brazil

  • Nastassja Seekoei - 2012-01-21 13:21

I agree! He has to do better then what Pele and Maradona did!!!

  • ruben.maistry - 2012-01-21 13:29

Pele, being classed as one of the greatest footballers of all time, should refrain from commenting on Lional Messi's status in football. Let non contenders decide. Both are brilliant footballers as well as Maradona,Cruyff, Best,Platini,Pushkas and many more.

Its difficult to compare a 1960s vehicle with the vehicles of today. Technology, design, speed etc all has changed over time but the concept is the same getting from one place to another with the best results. In the same way the core of football is the same but the game has changed. The players have changed using the technology of today in areas of fitness, speed stamina etc. Like the cars of yesteryears where there were only a few good ones, today the variety is so large its mind boggling. the same way the one or two excellent teams and players of the past cant compare to todays large pickings. Their is so many excellent teams and players its out of this world. Pele was great in his time and messi is great in todays time. Wherether pele would have been the player he was in todays time and messi in pele times nobody will know. let them be the football legends of their time.

    Pele is a jealous freak

  • Tokollo - 2012-01-23 08:56

Today's football is very tactical and advance. The defenders are well skilled so putting pressure on Messi to lift Argentina into a World-Cup victory is a bit too much. Pele did not win three world Cups, Brazil won three world cups. The entire team had natural talent.

In my opinion Neyma ( the Boy 's got class man wow ) is better than Messi so Pele the great is spot on.
