Parreira arrives in SA

2009-11-05 11:30

Johannesburg - Brazil's Carlos Alberto Parreira returned to South Africa on Thursday morning to resume coaching the beleaguered national football team.

His arrival at Johannesburg's OR Tambo airport was markedly devoid of the fanfare that surrounded his first coming as coach to the World Cup host nation in September 2006. At the time, "King Carlos," as he was dubbed, was given the red-carpet treatment.

The 66-year-old former Brazil national coach has been a controversial choice to lead Bafana Bafana into the World Cup in seven month's time.

Many South Africans bear him a grudge for abruptly quitting the job in April last year for family reasons and leaving the team in the hands of his hapless compatriot, Joel Santana.

Under Santana, the team's fortunes plummeted. He finally agreed to quit last month after Bafana notched up seven defeats in eight friendlies, against mostly mediocre teams.

The national squad's dismal performances over the past few years had caused dismay in South Africa as it prepares to stage the World Cup for the first time in Africa.

Parreira said he aims to take Bafana to at least the second round.

He was due to announce his line-up for friendlies against Japan on November 14 and Jamaica on November 17 later on Thursday.

In an interview in Brazil before his return, Parreira confirmed that he is willing to call up veteran striker Benni McCarthy, who was excluded from the South Africa team after clashing with Santana.

"I think (McCarthy) is the best striker. If he is willing to play, to sacrifice and to commit to the national team, I think he deserves a chance," Parreira said of the Blackburn Rovers forward.

Can we maybe just forget about McCarthy. He clearly has shown he has no interest in the team and his condescending attitude will only bring the team down. There are decent players in the country, Start looking for replacements instead of wasting time on someone who thinks he is God on a football pitch. I really want to see the guys do well but somehow I wouldnt be suprised If Parreira is coming back only to support his bank account but I honestly hope not. Ill remain sceptic until the next couple of matches. Goodluck Guys

I think he should rather coach Eskom people, they have a better chance of getting something right and at least if/when they do, we all win. Otherwise just use his salary to pay for the SABC license. Oh wait, no one wants to see the Banana boys lose on TV, on second though, just stop the public broadcaster and let Parreira be president of SA, I'm sure he is better qualified.

We do not need foreign coaches. Have faith in Julius (the Chosen One) as he will save us from total humiliation !

Come , March next year, the head-lines will be " Parreira lives SA"..

Plea!!!!!!!!!!!!!s, can we please forget about McCarthy. He treat this country like a Banana Country. I mean, how long has he been call up but in vain. I don't think there is anything he can contribute to the South African team rather demotivating other players. We do have good players however, they just need to be guided well.

Fair enough Santana could be the only person for the job at this stage so says SAFA , But what matters most is that he should deliver us from shame as we are the host.I wish the whole team and technical staff the best.

Every time i hear the words Parreira,Bafana Bafana my heart stop beating. enough is enough i've wasted too much money supporting this idiots. i should have saved that money for my children, but i've learned a lessons and i can't continue to waste more. i've decided to watch Bafana at home but due to imcompetence of our main broadcaster they delay the game meaning we only watch highlights but we pay them TV license every month for Generation and other shit stuff. another thing i've supported new SAFA president but he's doing kaka by bringing this monkey back to our country. i paid to much tax couples years ago and i haven't received any return because they've utilised that money to pay stupids idiots. i had sleepless nights during confedaration cup, i even burned my Bafana jersey because i believe it has been cursed by Santana.

TO SAFA, perreira said he is coming to help banana republic to play well in the WC,after that he will leave the post for local coach and SAFA accepted that silly comments from him........it means that local coaches cannot handle the pressure of the world cup......FACTS:hopefully i have 99% support from you soccer lovers to abondone banana games in the world cup.........nndaa

  • Dame Humilis - 2009-11-05 13:15

    What good will he do?

  • not surprised - 2009-11-05 13:15

Perreira is so hopeless for the fact that he says he aims at taking the squad to the second round and not to the semis at least. He is no good for SA, he's just an opportunist. South Africa might be having gold mines & diamond mines but we are not to be reaped off our monies like that.

  • ttt - 2009-11-05 13:16

@Not Fooled: We need the Julius and the black Jesus JZ to coach our team. Together they will unleash the ancestors power onto them. Then mighty Spain will quiver in their boots when they see that Bafana Bafana have matured or is is manured into men!

  • Drogba - 2009-11-05 13:38

Drogba, Eto, Ronaldo and Adebayor has shown worse attitudes than Benni in my view. I'd rather have the attitude of Benni on the field than someone who falls to the ground like a sack of potatoes when they just get touched. The only real world class striker we have, is Benni. No one in this country can take a penalty like him. No one in this country can head the ball like him. Non one in this country, has the composure on the field like he does, not even Pienaar. No one in this country, has a influence on the team as he has just by playing. We should forget the past...and even consider making him captain... What is done is done...focus ahead people...Benni is one of the ONLY world class players we have...and without world class players, we can't perform on a world class stage...

  • H - 2009-11-05 13:41

My theory. Parreira knew that Bafana wont be able to perform to our satisfaction (friendlies etc - santana era). He exits recommends santana (who must take the blame) and re-surface as saviour. he only have a few friendlies left so he cannot be judged and will have the honour of being a world cup team coach again.

  • Not fooled - 2009-11-05 13:49

Sorry ttt, love to reply and chat but must dash. There is fresh blood on the wall. Just heard that Benni has been recalled. Must phone JuJu & JZ and get their inside info. Ciao
