Zimbabwe coach wary of Billiat burnout

Cape Town - Zimbabwe national team coach Callisto Pasuwa is guarding against burning out Khama Billiat by not selecting him for the upcoming international friendly matches against Zambia and Tanzania.

Concerns have been raised that Billiat may start suffering from burnout as a result of the Mamelodi Sundowns star's taxing workload.

Billiat has had barely any rest since the conclusion of the 2015/16 season due to Downs' involvement in the CAF Champions League. Pitso Mosimane's side won the competition, with Billiat playing a hugely influential role.

The player's workload could also increase as he is set to be involved at the Club World Cup for Sundowns in December. In addition, he will then likely take part in the 2017 AFCON for the Warriors.

As such, Pasuwa is taking precautions by not selecting Billiat for the match against the Copper Bullets on November 4, as it falls outside the dates of a FIFA-sanctioned window.

He also will not be called upon to play against the Taifa Stars on the 13th of November.

Zimbabwe's coach told The Herald: "It is important to help in managing him so that he can be as fresh and fit as possible for us when we need him for important matches."

However, Billiat will feature this weekend for the Brazilians in a telkom knockout quarter-final clash against SuperSport United.

Kick off is at 19:00.
