Xulu honoured to win top defender accolade

Cape Town - Siyanda Xulu says he is honoured to have walked away with the Absa Premiership Defender of the Season award during the end of season awards ceremony held on Tuesday.

Xulu, who was earlier this week confirmed as the Bafana Bafana captain for the COSAFA Cup, was contesting for the accolade with team-mate Bevan Fransman and Innocent Maela of Orlando Pirates.

The award came with prize money of R50 000.

The defender made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Team of Choice having joined the club at the start of the season from Kaizer Chiefs.

Xulu told the SABC: "I was really shocked, but I am happy with the award.

"All I wanted when i joined the club was to make sure that I added value into the team and make sure that Maritzburg has some silverware.

"Unfortunately we lost it in the final and I’m sure going into the new season we will give it a try again having come so close.

"But again, I’m very honoured and overwhelmed."
