Walters backs Tinkler appointment

Cape Town - Veteran Cape Town City FC goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters believes new coach Eric Tinkler will succeed at the club.

All eyes will be on the Cape club following their purchase of Mpumalanga Black Aces' Premiership status.

The Mother City club has been active in the transfer market, with seven new players having been signed, and the 34-year-old Walters wants to contribute to City FC in their maiden season in the Premiership.

"I don't think we are a complete new team because we were about 14 that are core of the squad that played last season," Walters told Goal.

"I think the coaches have seen where the strengths and weaknesses of the team are and we lost our top goal scorer (Collins Mbesuma) from last season and we also lost two of our centre-back, so the coaches are pretty aware of what we need.

"But I am pretty confident in the signings we've made. We have also roped in some player from Europe and the boss is extremely confident in them.

"We are also under the guidance of a new coach who I believe is a perfect replacement for Muhsin. He has got the credentials and we have all seen what he has done having coached Pirates in Africa.

"Last season I set myself a goal and that was at least to be nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Season accolade that was achieved. I am now looking at winning the award and the worst case scenario would be to get nominated again."
