Vilakazi: Kekana deserved recognition

Cape Town - Former PSL Footballer of the Season Sibusiso Vilakazi insists Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana should have won something at the PSL Awards on Monday.

Kekana had an outstanding season with Sundowns where he played a crucial hand in their Absa Premiership title triumph.

The Bafana Bafana international was beaten to the Premiership Player's Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season award by 'Downs team-mate Khama Billiat.

Bivest Wits midfielder Vilakazi believes Kekana deserved some recognition for his contribution to the record-smashing season achieved by the Brazilians.

"He deserves it, Khama has proven himself. You could see in his first season with Sundowns he didn't do well after his move to Ajax but in his second season he started to come out of his shell," Vilakazi told KickOff.

"He has done well, he scored and created a lot of goals [33] for Sundowns. Most importantly, he was also a team player.

"I believe Hlompho also deserved to have got something and maybe Midfielder of the Season. He was fantastic this season. He could shut down opponents.

"He could move forward and score goals. It's very rare to find such kind of midfielders in the country."
