Tchilimbou strike downs Citizens

Cape Town - Free State Stars remain in the hunt for Absa Premiership honours after beating title rivals Cape Town City 1-0 at Goble Park Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts controlled proceedings in the opening stages without creating any chances until the 19th minute when Sinethemba Jantjie surged toward goal before seeing his shot deflected wide off a defender.

Jantjie threatened again on 26 minutes after the visitors failed to clear their lines, but he fired straight at Sage Stephens, who gratefully turned the ball behind the goal.

Stars continued to probe away and they finally made the breakthrough moments before half-time as Harris Tchilimbou fired past Stephens to score his first goal of the season.

City coach Benni McCarthy's made two changes at the interval in a bid to get a foothold in the game, but the substitutions had little effect in the second half.

The closest they came to an equaliser was in the 49th minute when Roland Putsche steered his header across the face of goal with Badra Sangare beaten.

Siphelele Mthembu had a chance to wrap up all three points for Ea Lla Koto after he went clean through on goal nine minutes from time, but he failed to beat Stephens having rushed his shot.
