Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns forward Percy Tau says his recent displays for the champions of Africa has been down to the belief coach Pitso Mosimane has instilled in him.

Mosimane handed the 22-year-old a free, false nine role in their Premiership encounter with Highlands Park on Sunday.

Tau rewarded his manager with a thrilling performance, scoring one goal and grabbing three assists in a 5-0 win, which the academy graduate hopes will spark a surge up the table.

"It's very important for me as a striker to score, but I'm happy if I assist the guys to score," he said after the game. "If they're in a better position to score, I'm glad.

"The coach told me that I must also take shots at goal and I got that one, I said let me try, I'll say sorry after.

"I think we did well as a team, we got the goals, which was important and we got them early in the first half," he added. "In the second half we just controlled the game, so I'm just happy that we played good football.

"We are still playing catch-up games... for now we are happy with the progress, some of the guys are coming in and getting game-time, and we're getting better game by game."

The Brazilians are currently in eighth place, seven points behind leaders Bidvest Wits, albeit with three games in hand over the Students.

Sundowns next travel to Cape Town where they will face an under-performing Ajax Cape Town side at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.

Kick off is at 19:30.
