Sundowns out to take grip on top spot

Cape Town - Maritzburg United will have the challenge of hosting Mamelodi Sundowns at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday.

Maritzburg played to a fourth successive draw when they held Orlando Pirates 3-3 at home on January 16.

The KwaZulu-Natal side has claimed three points from seven home matches this season.

The Team of Choice is placed 16th on the Absa Premiership log with eight points from 14 matches.

Sundowns extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches with a 2-0 home win over SuperSport United on January 23.

The Tshwane side has claimed 11 points from seven away matches this season.

The Brazilians are placed first on the Absa Premiership log with 33 points from 15 matches.

In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and Sundowns have met in 19 league matches since 2005/06.

The Brazilians have 13 wins compared to three for the Team of Choice, while three matches have been drawn.

Maritzburg have won two of their nine home matches against Sundowns, suffering six defeats in the process.

When the teams met earlier this season, the Brazilians claimed a comfortable 3-0 home win.

The teams have never played to a goalless draw in their 19 meetings.
