Cape Town - Platinum Stars surrendered an early lead to play to a 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was the worst possible start for the home side who conceded a goal after eight minutes due to a woeful mistake by young goalkeeper Jethren Barr.
Platinum Stars striker Eleazar Rodgers hustled well to charge down a poor clearance from Barr and was fortunate enough to see the ball rebounding off him and into the goal, 1-0.
Despite going behind Wits were not deterred and pushed forward, finding the equalising goal in the 15th minute thanks to a clinical 20-yard shot from James Keene, 1-1.
The next decent effort on goal only came just after the hour mark, but Dikwena goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela was alert to the danger and made a good save to deny Elias Pelembe from long range.
In the 42nd minute Daine Klate almost found his side’s second goal, but his 22-yard free-kick from a tight angle on the right was tipped over the crossbar by Mzimela.
The scores were deadlocked at the break.
The second half failed to produce much goalmouth action with both teams squandering possession in the final third of the field due to poor decision making and bad passing.
Neither side really threatened and had to settle for the draw on the night.
The draw sees Wits in third place on the log with 33 points, six adrift of Mamelodi Sundowns in pole position while Platinum Stars are up to 27 points in fifth place on the table.
