Soweto giants face tough PSL start

Cape Town - With the Premier Soccer League formally announcing the 2016/17 fixture list for the South African domestic season, it appears both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are in for a tough schedule of matches during the opening weeks of the Absa Premiership campaign.

The Glamour Boys have arguably the toughest opening when they take on Bidvest Wits away from home on August 23. The Absa Premiership runners-up are a tough nut to crack at home, and won't need extra motivation for the visit of Amakhosi.

Bucs' opening match sees them take on Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium - a game that the Ghost faithful will no doubt expect to see all three points collected.

However, a tough away clash with Ajax Cape Town on September 13 in the league will be a real test for Muhsin Ertugral's charges.

The following day Chiefs welcome the visit of Platinum Stars - a challenging contest for Steve Komphela's side. Dinaledi enjoyed a good season in 2015/16 under Cavin Johnson as they finished third in the Absa Premiership.

Both Soweto giants will then take on PSL newcomers in the form of Cape Town City and Highlands Park - two potential banana skins for both clubs to contend with. Bucs face City on September 20 and Chiefs take on Highlands the following day.

Meanwhile, Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns only get their league title defence underway on 14 September against Maritzburg United.

This is due to the club's CAF Champions League commitments.
