Scott: signings show Wits' ambition

Cape Town - Quality new signings, and strength in depth, show that champions Bidvest Wits mean business again this season, says midfielder Granwald Scott.

The Clever Boys won the top-flight title for the first time in their 96-year history under Gavin Hunt's leadership last season.

Looking to ensure they are in with a shot of defending their league title (they also won the MTN8 last season) while also participating in the CAF Champions League, the Johannesburg-based side have been busy in the transfer market.

The marquee signing was of course former Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar, with other new arrivals including Bafana Bafana play-maker Daylon Classon, exciting former Platinum Stars youngster Kobamelo Kodisang, and defenders Slavko Damjanovic and Bokang Tlhone.

Scott admits it is going to be tough to successfully defend the title, but is confident the club have the capacity to beat off the challengers.

"We're building a team that will ensure we can compete with the best and at the highest level," Scott told KickOff.

"It will definitely be tough in the new season as teams are desperate to overthrow us. But if you look at the quality and depth we have now with the signings we made - it tells you about the club and the coach's ambitions and plans.

"This is fantastic and needs to be saluted and I think we're on the right path. We are not intimidated by anyone. I think we should be ready to compete with the best in Africa with the good mix and quality of players we now have.

"It will be a long tough season especially with our commitments in Africa. I think that we're on the right path to challenge for more honours and success," the 29-year-old added.
