Santos want PSL return, partners with Igesund

Cape Town - Former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund will take over the reins of ABC Motsepe League side Santos, after it was announced he has partnered with the club.

The former Premiership outfit have fallen on hard times in recent years, and, after suffering relegation from South Africa's top flight in 2011/12, once again suffered another demotion as they went down from the National First Division at the end of 2016/17.

However, it seems the side from Cape Town have ambitions to restore their status as a major player in South African football, after it emerged that Igesund has come on board for the People's Team.

He last coached in the PSL last season with Highlands Park, but could not help them avoid the drop.

In addition to signing the 61-year-old, Santos have also reportedly signed an agreement with prominent businessman Bryn Ressell.

"In order to rise from the ashes stronger than ever before, it is essential we consolidate the current operation and strengthen ourselves through the addition of various strategic partners," a club statement read.

"That said Santos FC is proud to welcome on board Gordon Igesund and Bryn Ressell as our newest partners.

"In order to get back to the glory days, and return to the PSL, the club has set themselves a four-year plan.

"The plan will continue to place great value on the youth development structures within the club while building a winning team of players and coach which will be mentored by Gordon."
