SAFA to meet Ajax over CAF withdrawal

Cape Town - Ajax Cape Town and officials from the South African Football Association will meet today to discuss the reasoning behind their withdrawal from the CAF Confederation Cup.

Roger De Sa announced of Friday that the Urban Warriors will not take part in the competition, claiming there's been no guarantee of safety during their scheduled trip to face Sagrada Esperanca in Dundo, Angola.

The MTN8 winners could be faced with a three-year ban from all African competitions for failing to participate in the tournament and receive a hefty fine from CAF, according to the rules of the federation.

"A withdrawal reported after the engagement and before the establishment of the fixtures leads to the loss of the engaged club with an imposed fine of three thousand US dollars," CAF rules state. 

De Sa who led his former club Orlando Pirates to the final of the African Champions league in 2013 confirmed that SAFA has scheduled a meeting with the club.

"I was involved in lot of the discussions. A lot of phone calls were made, I speak the language. There were numerous emails, faxes and phone calls to all of the PSL, SAFA, CAF and there is nothing we can do. We didn't get anything back," the 51-year old told KickOff.

"We can't take a risk, it's about the safety and security of the players - that's it. We will hear more tomorrow when we face SAFA and see what the outcome would be."
