Cape Town - The South African Football Association (SAFA) have promised a full investigation into the stamped at FNB Stadium that cost the lives of two people and left many others injured, some critically.
The stampede took place during the traditional South African soccer season opening match, the Carling Black Label Cup encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Players and officials inside the stadium were not aware of the incident and the match continued with Kaizer Chiefs winning 1-0.
SAFA president, Danny Jordaan passed on his organisation's sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives as well as those injured during the stampede. Jordaan said a full investigation into the disaster would be carried out.
“We are going to ask for a full report and institute a full investigation on what transpired and the cause for the stampede," said Jordaan.
“I would also like to wish the injured speedy recovery. A football match is supposed to be a place of entertainment not a death field and what happened to at FNB Stadium is very unfortunate,” he added.
