Polokwane too strong for Martizburg

Cape Town - Polokwane City thrashed Maritzburg United 3-1 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday night.

Following their win on the night, Rise and Shine move to position 11 on the Absa Premiership standings, while the Team of Choice remained at the bottom.

The match got off to a slow start, but the home side enjoyed more possession than their visitors in the early stages of the game.

Malawian striker Essau Kanyenda took a shot from edge of the Maritzburg box and it went wide of the target 10 minutes into the game.

Maritzburg midfielder Deolin Mekoa also tried his luck from range in the 21st minute, but his shot went inches wide of the target.

The Team of Choice gained control of the game as it progressed and in the 37th minute South Africa youth international Mekoa made it 1-0 to Maritzburg with a good finish.

Rise and Shine tried to respond with a goal, but the visitors contained them until the match referee blew the half-time whistle.

The home side dominated the second-half as Maritzburg defended too deep while trying to retain their slender lead.

Muzikayifathi Ngidi restored parity for Rise and Shine in the 57th minute with a good finish following a decent move by the home side.

It was soon 2-1 to Polokwane after their top goal scorer in the league, Thobani Mncwango, netted with powerful left footed shot.

Polokwane's 3-1 victory was sealed with three minutes left on the clock by Sipho Jembula, much to the delight of the home crowd.
