Pirates talking to Pienaar's representatives

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza is making no secret of the fact that he wants to sign former Bafana Bafana star Steven Pienaar.

Pienaar is a free agent after being released by Everton last week, and has been linked with a move back to South Africa to Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs or Pirates.

"We have been talking to [Pienaar] to see if he's available to play for us. If he is, we will pursue him," Khoza told The Sowetan.

Four years ago, Pirates signed another South African who had enjoyed a successful career in Europe - Benni McCarthy, who top scored for Bucs in the 2011/12 season helping the club win the treble, before retiring.

Khoza is hopeful that the 34-year-old Pienaar could have a similar impact. "Benni did well when he was with us, and he helped us a lot," he said.

Pienaar meanwhile has admitted that he would jump at the chance to play in a Soweto derby, and conceded it would more likely be for Pirates, a club he supports, rather than AmaKhosi.

"The idea of playing in [the Soweto Derby] game, you know, really appeals to me," he told TMG Digital.

"It is, after all, the biggest game in South Africa. I have spoken to a lot of players and they go on about this game.

"And with me being an Orlando Pirates fan, it is obviously a game that interests me."
