Pienaar sleeps as home is burgled

Cape Town - Former Bidvest Wits midfielder Steven Pienaar was the victim of a house robbery with thieves stealing a number of valuable items.

Pienaar and his family were asleep throughout the ordeal as the burglars entered his home in the middle of the night and stole a number of items including a sound system, cellphone, keys to his car and over R9 000 in cash.

"I was at home too but I didn’t hear anything," Pienaar told the Sunday Times.

"I am still surprised as to how they managed to pass through the electric fence and the laser beams.

"It appears that it was people who were too familiar with my house’s security and who knew that I and my family were sleeping at the time," he added.

Absa Premiership champions Wits recently released Pienaar just six months after the former Everton and Bafana Bafana midfielder joined the club.

After winning the title last season, the Students have endured a nightmare campaign this time around and find themselves bottom of the table near the halfway stage of the season.

Pienaar is one of several players who have underperformed for Wits this season and, having featured in only six league games, the club has decided to let him go.
