Overwhelmed Klate delight at sixth title

Cape Town - Daine Klate has described winning his sixth Premiership title as overwhelming but says he is "more delighted for the club" than himself.

When the Clever Boys won the title on Wednesday, it made Klate the most decorated footballer in the Premier Soccer League era.

The Bafana Bafana international won five back-to-back league titles - three at SuperSport United and two at Orlando Pirates - and is now two more ahead of the next best, Andre Arendse with four.

But Klate, ever the team player, played down his achievement, saying it was all about the team, than himself.

“Ja, I think it’s a spectacular evening for myself. But I’m more delighted for the club than myself,” the 32-year-old from Port Elizabeth was quoted by SowetanLIVE website.

“It’s a bit overwhelming. As we speak, I still have to make sense of everything."

“If you want to win the league, sign Daine Klate,” a commentator said after the game about the player who has also won a staggering seven cup medals.

But, Klate wasn’t just the only decorated player in Gavin Hunt’s all conquering side. Elias Pelembe is a multiple league winner, as is former Tottenham Hotspur defender Bongani Khumalo and ex-Bafana and Pirates star Moeneeb Josephs.

“... Pelembe was fantastic tonight. I think he played his best game of the season, and it showed his experience,” Klate continued.

“And obviously myself getting the goal, and Bongani Khumalo at the back.

“Having guys around - like Moeneeb Josephs who had won titles with me at Orlando Pirates - who had done it previously obviously helped everybody,” said Klate.

He concluded by praising coach Hunt, who he hoped would get the national team job one day.

“Gavin obviously is a brilliant coach - four times now.

“And hopefully he’s going to be in the reckoning for the Bafana job,” he said.
