Onyango ready to bury Chiefs hoodoo

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is hoping his side can end their hoodoo against Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout final on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians have tasted defeat in all three of their previous meetings with Chiefs in the final of the competition - in 1997, 1998 and 2007.

They will get the chance to end their poor record against Amakhosi when they renew hostilities in Durban, and Onyango says there is a real belief in the Downs camp that this could be their year.

"We lost to Celtic and it was in Durban. We want to win this one there this time," Onyango was quoted as saying by Sowetan Live.

"We have been working hard. Records are there to be broken. They [Chiefs] have dominated previous finals but we believe this is our time.

"We know it's not going to come easy. They are going to come at us and we know that they have the quality to hurt us, but we also have quality to hurt them. We need to take our chances."

Onyango also commented on the returning Keagan Dolly, who helped South Africa U23's secure a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics following a 3-1 victory over hosts Senegal in the third-place play-off.

The keeper believes Dolly will play some part in Wednesday's crunch clash, having departed Senegal shortly after Saturday's 3-1 victory.

He added: "He [Dolly] gives us extra legs because he is a young boy. He also did well in [the] under-23s.

"He has been having competitive game time and I believe he will be sharper than most of the guys."
