Ntanga strike keeps Arrows top of the pile

Durban - Golden Arrows consolidated their position at the top of the Premiership table thanks to a 1-0 win over Chippa United at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday.

Vuyani Ntanga scored the only goal after 65 minutes when he swept home a fine right-side cross by Siyabonga Dube.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic midfielder had missed a penalty only 11 minutes earlier after an expert save by Daniel Akpeyi.

The result ensured Abafana Bes'thende stayed top of the table, while defeat for mid-table Chippa lost for the first time in 2016/17.

The first half was littered with quality in the middle of the park, but hardly the final thirds.

There were two chances for Arrows, one fired straight at Akpeyi by Wayde Jooste during the early exchanges as the midfielder found space on the edge of the box.

Chippa's best chance was when Andile Mbenyane's deflected strike from outside the box looked to have the beating of Maxamilian Mbaeva, who somehow managed to backtrack and tip over.

The home side's best chance was on the half hour 31 minutes when Akpeyi's held on to the ball for too long, but after managing to get the ball away to the right, had his defenders to thank as Cliffton Miheso took too long to pull the trigger.

Eight minutes after the restart Arrows should have lead when Mbenyane brought down Nkanyiso Mngwengwe in the box. But Akpeyi saved expertly diving to his right to keep the scoreline goalless.

But there was no denying Arrows just after the hour. Marc van Heerden vacated his position on the left as he went forward and was dispossessed, with Musa Bilankulu threading a pass to Dube, who crossed for Ntanga to finish.

With time running out, Miheso should have made the game safe, but missed a one-on-one chance after he was put through by debutant Mauricio Barrios.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
