Morrison fires Bucs to victory

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates moved onto seven points from three Premiership matches after edging Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Ajax had the opening chance of the game, but Tashrique Morris dragged an angled shot wide of the far post.

Instead it was the hosts who went in front when a long throw-in was flicked to the back post, where Bernard Morrison fired in from a tight angle for his first league goal for the Soweto giants.

The Urban Warriors were close to finding an immediate reply, but Thabo Mosadi failed to hit the target from inside the box in the 11th minute.

But it was the Buccaneers who were to dominate the remainder of the first half, although they had little to show in the way of chances on goal as the visitors defence worked overtime to stay in the game.

Pirates began the second stanza in a lively fashion and looked to have doubled their advantage on 49 minutes when Thamsanqa Gabuza slotted in Thabo Qalinge's cross, but the offside flag came to Ajax's rescue.

The Cape outfit enjoyed a good period of play for 10 minutes, although they had no efforts on goal to show for it, while at the other end, Gabuza had another goal ruled offside in a very tight decision in the 67th minute.

A second goal continued to elude the Sea Robbers as Musa Nyatama shanked an effort wide with the goal at his mercy 15 minutes from time.

Morris had two great chances in the final four minutes to rescue a point late on for the Urban Warriors, but he was denied by a fine save by Wayne Sandilands before blasting another effort over the bar from close range.
