Morrison brace hands Pirates victory in Orlando

Cape Town - Bernard Morrison scored both goals as Orlando Pirates beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 in a Nedbank Cup clash at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

Pirates were on top for most of the opening half although they didn't have too many chances apart from the goal just before the interval. A second goal just after the restart gave Pirates some breathing room and they were able to play out for the victory with ease as Ajax offered little threat in attack.

The Cape side played mainly on the break and did have early chances, but Tendai Ndoro was off the mark with two efforts against his former club.

Pirates striker Bernard Morrison had a lively opening half and went in on goal after 10 minutes, but had the ball taken off his feet by Ajax keeper Jody February before the Ghanaian went close with an ambitious 45-yard chip which had February back-peddling nervously.

Happy Jele also came close when he arched a header from a Justin Shonga corner just past the post before Morrison gave the Buccaneers the lead after sliding in a cut-back from Shonga from 10-yards out.

The Ghana international's confidence high, he completed his brace three minutes after half time after a powerful run saw him tearing through the middle of the Urban Warriors defence before angling a shot into the bottom corner.

There was never any thought of a fight back from Ajax as Bucs stayed on top; Morrison having another chance go wide before Thembinkosi Lorch and Lyle Foster also shot off target as the game moved into the final 10 minutes.

Both teams had a couple of late chances, but those proved inconsequential as the Sea Robbers exacted revenge for their league defeat to Ajax to 10 days ago by booking their spot in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
