Mkhwanazi: Treble talks premature

Cape Town - Bidvest Wits defender Buhle Mkhwanazi says talks of a domestic treble is too early, as the Students prepare for a Nedbank Cup last-16 tie against Jomo Cosmos.

Wits ended the weekend leading the Premiership, but have since been overhauled by Cape Town City, who recorded a 4-1 victory over Chippa United on Monday evening. However, Gavin Hunt's side have two games in hand over the Citizens, who hold a single point advantage at the summit.

Talks have now surfaced in local media of the Clever Boys chasing a historic domestic treble, with Hunt having arguably assembled the strongest squad in the South African top-flight side's history.

But Mkhwanazi feels it would be daft to think as far ahead as the potential treble success, with Wits yet to secure any form of silverware this season, but is eager to see his side challenge for the Nedbank Cup title.

"We will be happy to win this cup. We have been doing well in the past few seasons, but we have not had what we think we deserve," he said as quoted by the Sunday World website. "If we win this game and progress, then we have a chance to win this cup.

"I (however) think it's still too early to say if a treble is possible. There are a whole lot of teams who are doing well at the moment. We will see how things go at a later stage."

The Mamelodi Sundowns youth product has been an ever-present figure under Hunt's tutelage this season, scoring five goals in 20 games across all competitions.

Kick off is at 19:30.
