Cape Town - Ernst Middendorp has left Free State Stars, with a return to Maritzburg United for what would be a third stint at the club seemingly on the cards.
Soccer Laduma broke the news on Thursday.
"I'm disappointed in the manner he handled it, it could've been handled better and he's fully aware that January and February are very tough. I hope he hasn't put money before his career, and it's a sucker punch for us. When clubs behave like this we get smacked, but when the coach does it it's fine," Stars general manager Rantsi Mokoena told the website.
Middendorp's love/hate relationship with the Team of Choice dates back to 2009 when he first took the reins at the Midlands club.
But an animated outburst at a televised post-match interview ultimately cost him his job in 2011.
He would return in 2012 only to leave again in 2013, with reports then over clashes between him and the board the understood reason.
But now, with Maritzburg bottom of the PSL log and desperate to preserve their PSL safety, the man who knows the club better than most looks set to return.
