Memela wants to emulate Myeni

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates midfielder Luvuyo Memela says he wants to emulate former Buccaneers winger Sifiso Myeni after his superb brace against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby.

Myeni spent four seasons with the Sea Robbers where he scored 15 league goals and helped the club to the finals of the CAF Champions League, as well as the Confederations Cup under Roger de Sa and Eric Tinkler respectively.

Nonetheless, Memela was the hero in last Saturday's derby as he came on as a second half substitute to score a memorable double against the Glamour Boys at FNB Stadium. Thus far in 2017/18 he has managed five goals in 16 appearances.

As such, the player says he takes inspiration from Myeni in terms of achieving his goals with the outfit from Mayfair.

"When I joined Pirates one of the key players was Sifiso and knew that eventually I would be required to take over from where he left off. He was an important player for the team and that motivated me," the 30-year-old told Soccer Laduma website.

"But it did not happen immediately. One does not simply walk into a team of Pirates' stature and do well immediately. It takes hard work, but I’m happy (with) the current form I’m in. It's helping the team and we are winning which is the most important thing.

"This was my first derby appearance since joining Pirates and I’m happy I managed to make a significant contribution and helping my team win. Now we have to focus on winning the remaining games and see what happens at the end of the season."
