Mbekile holding Mphahlele torch

Cape Town - Mamelodi Sundowns defender Asavela Mbekile has vowed to fill in effectively for injured captain Ramahlwe Mphahlele.

Mphahlele is expected to be sidelined for up to two months with a Grade-3 ligament tear in his left ankle.

Mbekile, who has been deputizing for Mphahlele in the right-back position, is prepared for deployment anywhere on the field of play.

"It is a big blow. He is our captain and he has been doing well. However, I think players that are available in the team will do the job if selected to play," Mbekile told Soccer Laduma.

"It is also an opportunity for me to play, yes, but I still have to work hard. Having said that, it doesn't mean I am happy or rejoicing that Rama is injured. I am a professional so I wish him a speedy recovery."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
